مَنْ تَخَلَّفَ عَنّا مُحِقَ۔
Whoever turns away from us will be annihilated.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Muhammad (S) And His Progeny)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ تَخَلَّفَ عَنّا مُحِقَ۔
This can be translated as,
Whoever turns away from us will be annihilated.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening Hadith in light of the Quran. The word (takhalafa) "تَخَلَّفَ" means to turn away, to abandon, or to deviate from the path. It signifies a deliberate act of distancing oneself from the teachings and guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), particularly Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). The word (muhiq) "مُحِقَ" means to be annihilated or destroyed. It implies severe consequences for those who choose to disregard the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we must turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Imran, verse 187,
And whoever turns away from the remembrance of Allah - He will make for him a devil, who becomes his companion and leads him astray.
This verse highlights the consequences of turning away from the remembrance of Allah, which includes being led astray by the devil. Similarly, turning away from the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ) can lead one towards destruction and spiritual ruin.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 24, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life.
This verse emphasizes the importance of responding to the call of Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ). The Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), including Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), are the inheritors of the Prophet's knowledge and guidance. Turning away from them means turning away from the path that gives life to our souls.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed unparalleled knowledge and wisdom. His teachings and actions were in complete alignment with the Quran. Therefore, when he warns that those who turn away from him will be annihilated, it is a reflection of the severe consequences of abandoning the true path of Islam.
The consequences of turning away from the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) can manifest in various ways. It can lead to spiritual emptiness, moral decay, and a loss of guidance. By disregarding the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), Muslims risk falling into the traps of ignorance, innovation, and deviation from the true essence of Islam.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to hold fast to the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), particularly Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). We should seek knowledge from their wisdom, emulate their virtues, and follow their guidance. By doing so, we can safeguard ourselves from the destructive consequences of turning away from the true path of Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of the severe consequences of abandoning the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). It urges us to hold fast to their guidance, seek knowledge from their wisdom, and strive to embody their virtues. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) protect us from deviating from the true path and grant us the ability to follow the footsteps of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
