مَنْ آثَرَ رِضا رَبّ قادِر فَلْيَتَكَلَّمْ بِكَلِمَةِ عَدْل عِندَ سُلْطان جائر۔
Whoever prefers the pleasure of the All-Powerful Lord, then let him speak with words of justice in the presence of the tyrannical ruler.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Being Pleased And Satisfied)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of speaking words of justice in the presence of a tyrannical ruler. Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding.
The word (athara) "آثَرَ" in Arabic means to prefer or prioritize something over another. In this context, it refers to giving precedence to the pleasure and satisfaction of the All-Powerful Lord over any worldly gain or personal benefit. It highlights the importance of prioritizing the divine commandments and principles of justice over the desires of a tyrannical ruler.
The word (rida) "رِضا" signifies the pleasure and satisfaction of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is the ultimate goal for every believer, as seeking the pleasure of Allah is the key to attaining success in this world and the hereafter. By prioritizing the pleasure of Allah, one aligns their actions and words with the divine will.
The phrase (kalimat al-'adl) "كَلِمَةِ عَدْل" translates to "words of justice." It refers to speaking truthfully and standing up for justice, even in the face of oppression and tyranny. It encompasses the principles of fairness, equity, and righteousness, which are essential in maintaining a just society.
The term (sultan) "سُلْطَان" refers to a ruler or authority figure, while (ja'ir) "جَائِر" means tyrannical or oppressive. Together, they denote a ruler who abuses their power, oppresses the people, and violates the principles of justice.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah An-Nisa (4:135):
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes the importance of upholding justice, even if it goes against our personal interests or the interests of those close to us. It reminds us that Allah's commandments should always take precedence over worldly considerations. Speaking words of justice in the presence of a tyrannical ruler is a manifestation of this principle.
Another verse that supports the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8):
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse emphasizes the importance of remaining just and fair, even when faced with animosity or opposition from others. It reminds us that justice should not be compromised due to personal biases or societal pressures. Speaking words of justice in the presence of a tyrannical ruler requires courage and steadfastness, as it may invite retaliation or persecution. However, Allah assures us that being just is closer to righteousness and that He is aware of our actions.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we understand that speaking words of justice in the presence of a tyrannical ruler is an act of obedience to Allah. It is a means of upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and righteousness in society. By prioritizing the pleasure of Allah over worldly gains, we demonstrate our commitment to the divine commandments and contribute to the establishment of a just and equitable society.
May Allah guide us all to speak words of justice and grant us the strength to stand up for truth and righteousness, even in the face of oppression. Ameen.
