Hadith #1098

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

ما أطالَ أحدٌ في الأمَلِ إلاّ قَصََّر فِي العَمَلِ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of balancing our hopes and aspirations with our actions. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this enlightening Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (ataala) "أطالَ" in the Hadith means to lengthen or extend. It refers to the act of having excessive hopes and expectations without putting in the necessary effort and action to achieve them. On the other hand, the word (qassara) "قَصََّر" means to curtail or shorten, indicating a deficiency in one's actions due to an excessive focus on hopes and dreams.

The Quran provides us with guidance on this matter. In Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 20:131)

And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.

This verse reminds us not to be overly attached to the temporary pleasures of this world, as they are merely a test. It highlights the importance of focusing on the provision and blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), which are far superior and everlasting.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mu'minun, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 25:67)

And those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly but are ever, between that, [justly] moderate.

This verse teaches us the importance of moderation in our actions, including spending. It reminds us not to be excessive or miserly in our deeds, but to strike a balance between the two. This balance is crucial in order to avoid the pitfalls of either extreme.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to avoid falling into the trap of wishful thinking without taking practical steps towards achieving their goals. It cautions against becoming complacent and relying solely on hopes and dreams without putting in the necessary effort and action.

For example, if a person wishes to attain success in their studies or career, they must not simply hope for it, but rather work diligently and strive towards their goals. They should put in the necessary time, effort, and dedication to achieve success. Similarly, in matters of spirituality, one must not rely solely on prayers and supplications, but also engage in acts of worship, seek knowledge, and practice good deeds.

The consequences of neglecting action while having excessive hopes can be detrimental. It can lead to unfulfilled dreams, wasted potential, and a sense of regret. Conversely, when we strike a balance between our hopes and actions, we are more likely to achieve success, both in this world and the Hereafter.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of aligning our hopes and aspirations with our actions. It encourages us to be proactive, diligent, and consistent in our efforts while maintaining a realistic outlook. By doing so, we can maximize our potential and attain the blessings and mercy of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to balance our hopes and actions, and may He guide us on the path of righteousness. Ameen.
