The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
الكَرِيمُ يَأبَى العَارَ، وَيُكْرِمُ الجَارَ
This Hadith highlights the noble qualities of a person who refuses to accept disgrace and instead, treats their neighbor with honor and respect.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by analyzing the key words. The term "الكَرِيمُ" refers to a noble-minded person, someone who possesses high moral values and honorable characteristics. Such an individual is known for their integrity, generosity, and dignity. They uphold their self-respect and refuse to engage in actions that bring shame or disgrace upon themselves.
The word "يَأبَى" signifies the rejection or refusal of something. In this context, it emphasizes the strong determination of the noble-minded person to distance themselves from any form of disgrace or dishonor. They firmly stand against engaging in any act that would tarnish their reputation or compromise their principles.
Furthermore, the phrase "وَيُكْرِمُ الجَارَ" highlights the importance of treating one's neighbor with honor and respect. The term "الجَارَ" refers to a neighbor, whether it be a physical neighbor or a member of the community. The noble-minded person understands the significance of maintaining good relations with their neighbors and goes above and beyond to show kindness, support, and consideration towards them.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of maintaining one's honor and dignity in Surah Al-Qalam, verse 3:
