Hadith #7074

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The friend of every person is his intellect and his enemy is his ignorance.

This wise utterance emphasizes the importance of knowledge and understanding in the life of a Muslim. Let us delve into the exegesis of this hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (sadiq) "صَديقُ" in this hadith refers to a friend, someone who is close and trustworthy. The word (kulli) "كُلِّ" means every or each, implying that this friend is essential for every individual. (imr') "امْرِء" refers to a person, emphasizing the universality of this statement. The word (aqluhu) "عَقْلُهُ" means intellect or reason, which is the faculty of understanding, discernment, and rational thinking. On the other hand, (aduhu) "عَدُوُّهُ" means enemy, and (jahluhu) "جَهْلُهُ" means ignorance or lack of knowledge.

The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of knowledge and understanding. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9),

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?

This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who are ignorant. Knowledge is a means of guidance and enlightenment, while ignorance leads to confusion and misguidance.

In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.

This verse emphasizes the importance of verifying information and seeking knowledge before passing judgment or taking action. Ignorance can lead to harmful consequences and regrettable actions.

The hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder that our intellect is our closest friend, guiding us towards truth, righteousness, and understanding. It is through our intellect that we are able to comprehend the teachings of Islam, reflect upon the signs of Allah in the universe, and make informed decisions in our daily lives.

When we cultivate our intellect and seek knowledge, we are able to distinguish between right and wrong, truth and falsehood. We become aware of our responsibilities as Muslims and are able to fulfill them with wisdom and insight. Our intellect becomes a shield against ignorance, superstition, and false beliefs.

On the other hand, ignorance is our greatest enemy. It blinds us to the truth, leads us astray, and hinders our spiritual growth. Ignorance can manifest in various forms, such as ignorance of the Quran, ignorance of the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), or ignorance of the principles of Islamic jurisprudence. It is through ignorance that misunderstandings arise, divisions occur, and conflicts escalate.

Ignorance can have dire consequences not only in our personal lives but also in society as a whole. It can lead to intolerance, prejudice, and injustice. It is through knowledge and understanding that we can overcome these challenges and build a just and harmonious society.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, emphasized the importance of seeking knowledge throughout his life. He once said,

Knowledge is better than wealth, for knowledge guards you while you have to guard wealth.

This statement highlights the superiority of knowledge over material possessions and the protection it provides against ignorance and its harmful consequences.

In conclusion, the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize the acquisition of knowledge and understanding. Our intellect is our closest friend, guiding us towards truth and righteousness. Ignorance, on the other hand, is our greatest enemy, leading us astray and hindering our spiritual growth. By seeking knowledge, reflecting upon the Quran, and following the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), we can overcome ignorance and strive towards a life of guidance and enlightenment. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and understanding to befriend our intellect and overcome ignorance.
