لايُسْلِمُ الدّينُ مَنْ تَحَصَّنَ بِهِ۔
Religion does not surrender the one who takes refuge in it.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Religion And Sharia Law)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لايُسْلِمُ الدّينُ مَنْ تَحَصَّنَ بِهِ۔
This Hadith can be translated as,
Religion does not surrender the one who takes refuge in it.
To understand the connotation behind this statement, let us delve into the key words and their implications.
The word (takes refuge) "تَحَصَّنَ" in this Hadith refers to seeking protection, shelter, and security in religion. It signifies the act of turning to religion as a source of guidance, solace, and strength in times of difficulty and adversity. It implies a deep trust and reliance on the teachings and principles of Islam to navigate through the challenges of life.
To shed light on the significance of seeking refuge in religion, we can turn to the Quran. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:24), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life.
This verse emphasizes the importance of responding to the call of Allah and His Messenger, as it is through their guidance that true life and salvation can be attained. Seeking refuge in religion is a means of responding to this call and finding true spiritual fulfillment.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse reassures us that Allah is aware of our capabilities and limitations. When we take refuge in religion, we acknowledge that our burdens can be lightened and our difficulties can be overcome through the guidance and support of Allah.
Now, let us reflect on the wise message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. By stating that
Religion does not surrender the one who takes refuge in it,
Imam Ali highlights the unwavering strength and resilience that can be found in seeking solace in religion. When we turn to Islam for guidance, it becomes a shield that protects us from the trials and tribulations of life.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also reminds us of the transformative power of faith. When we fully embrace the teachings of Islam and seek refuge in its principles, our perspective on life changes. We become more steadfast in the face of challenges, more patient in times of adversity, and more hopeful in moments of despair. Religion becomes a source of inner peace and tranquility, enabling us to navigate the ups and downs of life with grace and resilience.
Taking refuge in religion also implies seeking knowledge and understanding. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, and he emphasized the importance of seeking knowledge throughout his life. By seeking refuge in religion, we are encouraged to delve deep into the teachings of Islam, to ponder upon the verses of the Quran, and to strive for a deeper understanding of our faith. This knowledge becomes a source of empowerment and enlightenment, guiding us towards righteousness and protecting us from the pitfalls of ignorance and misguidance.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the profound strength and solace that can be found in seeking refuge in religion. By turning to Islam as a source of guidance, protection, and knowledge, we can navigate through the challenges of life with resilience and steadfastness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to seek refuge in religion and may He bless us with the strength to uphold our faith in all circumstances.
