اِسْمَحُوا إذا سُئِلْتُمْ۔
Give generously when you are asked.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Begging And Asking People)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "اِسْمَحُوا إذا سُئِلْتُمْ۔" This is translated as,
Give generously when you are asked.
Let us delve into the profound wisdom and guidance contained within this statement, drawing upon the teachings of the Quran.
The word (ismaḥū) "اِسْمَحُوا" is derived from the root word (samaḥa) "صَمَحَ", which means to forgive, pardon, or overlook. In this context, it signifies the act of granting permission or allowing something. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is instructing us to be generous and forgiving when we are approached for help or assistance.
This guidance aligns with the teachings of the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the virtues of generosity and giving. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 261, Allah says,
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
This verse highlights the immense rewards and blessings that await those who give selflessly.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, verse 80, Allah states,
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking sustenance from Allah and relying on His provisions. By giving generously when asked, we are demonstrating our trust in Allah's ability to provide for us and acknowledging that our wealth is ultimately a blessing from Him.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) instruction to give generously when asked also reflects his own exemplary character. He was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, and his generosity was a manifestation of his deep understanding of the teachings of Islam. He recognized that wealth is a means of serving others and fulfilling their needs, and he encouraged his followers to adopt the same mindset.
When we give generously, we not only fulfill the immediate needs of those who ask, but we also contribute to the well-being of society as a whole. Our acts of charity and kindness have a ripple effect, inspiring others to follow suit and creating a culture of compassion and empathy. Moreover, giving generously purifies our hearts and strengthens our connection with Allah, as it is an act of worship and a means of seeking His pleasure.
On the other hand, if we withhold our generosity and refuse to give when asked, we risk becoming selfish and disconnected from the needs of others. This goes against the teachings of Islam, which emphasize the importance of caring for the less fortunate and sharing our blessings with those in need. In Surah Al-Ma'un, verses 1-3, Allah condemns those who neglect the basic needs of others, saying,
Have you seen the one who denies the Recompense? For that is the one who drives away the orphan. And does not encourage the feeding of the poor.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) "اِسْمَحُوا إذا سُئِلْتُمْ۔" serves as a reminder for us to be generous and forgiving when we are approached for help. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the virtues of giving and caring for others. By embodying this guidance, we not only fulfill the immediate needs of those who ask, but we also contribute to the betterment of society and strengthen our connection with Allah. May we all strive to embody the spirit of generosity and compassion in our lives as Muslims.
