Jealousy is imprisonment of the soul.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Jealousy)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الحسد حبس الروح" which translates to

Jealousy is imprisonment of the soul.

This thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the destructive nature of jealousy and its impact on one's spiritual well-being.

Let us delve deeper into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. (al-hasad) "الحسد" refers to the feeling of envy or jealousy towards someone else's blessings, possessions, or qualities. It is a negative emotion that arises when one desires what others have and wishes for their loss or deprivation. (habs) "حبس" means imprisonment or confinement, indicating that jealousy restricts and confines the soul, preventing it from experiencing true freedom and contentment.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against the destructive nature of jealousy in several verses. In Surah Al-Nisa, verse 54, Allah says,

Or do they envy people for what Allah has given them of His bounty?

This verse highlights the futility of jealousy, as it stems from a lack of gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon others by Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Falaq, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) teaches us to seek refuge from the evil of the envious person, saying,

And from the evil of an envier when he envies.

This verse emphasizes the harmful consequences of jealousy, as it can lead to malicious actions and harm towards others.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to guard themselves against the destructive nature of jealousy. Jealousy not only harms the one who harbors it but also creates a toxic environment within society. It breeds resentment, animosity, and ill-will, which are contrary to the principles of Islam.

When one is consumed by jealousy, their focus shifts from their own blessings and the opportunities for personal growth and self-improvement. Instead, they become preoccupied with comparing themselves to others and feeling discontented with their own circumstances. This fixation on what others possess or achieve leads to a constant state of dissatisfaction and unhappiness.

Moreover, jealousy can lead to harmful actions and behaviors. It may drive individuals to undermine or harm those they are jealous of, whether through backbiting, slander, or even physical harm. Such actions not only violate the rights of others but also tarnish the character and integrity of the jealous person.

On the other hand, Islam encourages believers to cultivate a mindset of gratitude and contentment. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly reminds us in the Quran to be grateful for the blessings He has bestowed upon us. In Surah Al-Nahl, verse 18, Allah says,

And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them.

This verse reminds us of the countless blessings we have been granted, and it encourages us to focus on our own blessings rather than being envious of others.

By practicing gratitude and contentment, we free ourselves from the imprisonment of jealousy. We learn to appreciate the unique blessings and qualities that Allah has bestowed upon us, recognizing that each individual has their own set of trials and blessings. This mindset allows us to celebrate the success and happiness of others genuinely, without feeling threatened or envious.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to guard themselves against the destructive nature of jealousy. It highlights the negative impact of jealousy on one's spiritual well-being and emphasizes the importance of cultivating gratitude and contentment. By freeing ourselves from the imprisonment of jealousy, we can experience true freedom, peace, and harmony within ourselves and in our interactions with others. May Allah protect us from the evils of jealousy and grant us the ability to appreciate and celebrate the blessings of others.
