Verily the final destination is al-Qiyāmah and this is enough of an admonition for the one who reasons, and [enough of] a warning for the one who is unaware; and after that - what you know of the torment of the Day of Judgment and the frightening terror, and the deafening of the ears, and the turning of the ribs, and the narrowness of the grave, and the intensity of sadness and heavy-heartedness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Hereafter)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the ultimate destination of all human beings, which is the Day of Judgment (al-Qiyāmah). Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that the knowledge of the Day of Judgment is sufficient as a reminder for those who possess intellect and serves as a warning for those who are unaware.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of the important words used in this Hadith. The term "al-Qiyāmah" refers to the Day of Resurrection, the Day when all human beings will be resurrected and held accountable for their actions in this world. It is the Day of Judgment, where every soul will face the consequences of their deeds.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) mentions the torment and terror of the Day of Judgment. This refers to the overwhelming fear and anxiety that will engulf the hearts of people when they witness the unimaginable events and punishments of that day. The deafening of the ears signifies the overwhelming noise and chaos that will prevail, making it impossible to hear anything else. The turning of the ribs represents the intense fear and unease that will cause physical discomfort and distress. The narrowness of the grave symbolizes the constricted space in which the deceased will be confined, intensifying their feelings of confinement and helplessness. Lastly, the intensity of sadness and heavy-heartedness reflects the immense grief and regret that individuals will experience upon realizing the consequences of their actions.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly reminds us of the Day of Judgment and its terrifying consequences. In Surah Al-Qiyamah, Allah says, (Quran 75:1-2)
Nay! I swear by the Day of Resurrection. And I swear by the self-reproaching soul.
This emphasizes the seriousness and certainty of the Day of Judgment.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Hajj, Allah warns, (Quran 22:1)
O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the [final] Hour is a terrible thing.
This verse highlights the importance of fearing Allah and being conscious of the impending Day of Judgment.
The purpose of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement is to remind and warn Muslims about the ultimate destination and the consequences of their actions. It serves as a wake-up call for those who possess intellect, urging them to reflect upon their deeds and strive for righteousness. It also serves as a warning for those who are unaware or ignorant of the Day of Judgment, urging them to seek knowledge and prepare for the Hereafter.
Reflecting on the torment and terror of the Day of Judgment should motivate Muslims to lead a righteous life, seeking forgiveness for their sins and striving to please Allah in all aspects of their lives. It should instill a sense of urgency and responsibility, as every action and decision made in this world will have eternal consequences.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims of the ultimate destination, the Day of Judgment. It emphasizes the importance of reflecting upon the consequences of our actions and striving for righteousness in order to attain success in the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to prepare for the Day of Judgment and may He make us among those who are successful on that day.
