اَلصَّبْرُ أفْضَلُ العُدَدِ۔
Patience is the best of assets.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الصبر أفضل العدد" which translates to
Patience is the best of assets.
This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the immense value and significance of patience in our lives as Muslims.
The word (sabr) "صبر" in Arabic refers to patience, endurance, and steadfastness in the face of difficulties, trials, and tribulations. It is a virtue that enables us to remain calm, composed, and steadfast in times of hardship, while maintaining our faith and trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Sabr is not simply a passive state of acceptance, but an active and conscious effort to persevere and overcome challenges with resilience and inner strength.
The word (afdal) "أفضل" means the best or the most excellent. It signifies the superiority and excellence of patience as compared to other qualities or assets. This Hadith emphasizes that patience is not just important, but it is the best and most valuable asset that a believer can possess.
The significance of patience is emphasized in numerous verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 155:
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.
This verse reminds us that trials and tribulations are a part of life, and it is through patience that we can navigate through them successfully.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran, verse 200, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.
This verse encourages believers to cultivate patience and steadfastness in their lives, as it is through these qualities that success can be attained.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for Muslims. Patience is not only a virtue, but it is also a means of personal growth and development. When faced with challenges, patience allows us to maintain our composure, make wise decisions, and seek solutions with a clear mind. It prevents us from reacting impulsively or succumbing to despair.
Moreover, patience strengthens our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) by demonstrating our trust in His wisdom and decree. It is a manifestation of our faith and reliance on Him, knowing that He is the best of planners and that every trial we face has a purpose and a lesson for us to learn.
Patience also has far-reaching consequences in our interactions with others. It enables us to exercise self-control, forgiveness, and empathy, even in the face of adversity. By embodying patience, we can foster harmony, understanding, and reconciliation in our relationships, thereby promoting a peaceful and compassionate society.
Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, we are reminded of the importance of cultivating patience in our lives. It is through patience that we can navigate the challenges of this world and attain success in the hereafter. Let us strive to embody this virtue, seeking Allah's guidance and strength to remain patient in all circumstances. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to practice patience and make it a cornerstone of our character.
