— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Disagreement)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

لَيْسَ مََعَ الخِلافِ اِيتِلافٌ۔

This can be translated as,

With disagreement there is no harmony.

This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of unity and the detrimental effects of discord within a community.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith. The word (khilaf) "خِلافِ" refers to disagreement or discord. It signifies a state of disagreement or conflict among individuals or groups. On the other hand, the word (aitilaf) "اِيتِلافٌ" refers to harmony, agreement, or unity. It represents a state of cohesion and cooperation among people.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of unity and warns against division in several verses. In Surah Al-Imran (3:103), Allah says,

And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.

This verse urges Muslims to unite and not let differences divide them. Similarly, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46), Allah reminds us,

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart.

The consequences of discord and disagreement are also highlighted in the Quran. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:73), Allah warns,

And those who disbelieved are allies of one another. If you do not do so, there will be fitnah on earth and great corruption.

This verse emphasizes that disunity among believers can lead to chaos and corruption. It is only through unity and harmony that a community can thrive and fulfill its potential.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize unity over discord. When disagreements arise, it is crucial to approach them with wisdom, patience, and a desire for resolution. This Hadith encourages Muslims to seek common ground and work towards reconciliation, rather than allowing differences to escalate into division and animosity.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his profound knowledge and wisdom. His teachings and actions serve as a guiding light for Muslims. In this Hadith, he reminds us that true harmony can only be achieved when disagreements are resolved and unity is prioritized. By following his example, Muslims can foster a sense of togetherness and create a strong, cohesive community.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

لَيْسَ مََعَ الخِلافِ اِيتِلافٌ۔

emphasizes the importance of unity and warns against the detrimental effects of discord. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize harmony over disagreement and to seek resolution in times of conflict. By following the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can strive towards creating a strong and united Muslim community.
