(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The end goal of knowledge is tranquillity and forbearance.

This Hadith emphasizes the profound purpose and ultimate outcome of seeking knowledge. Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith and explore their significance in light of the Quran.

The Arabic word (knowledge) "عِلْمِ" refers to the acquisition of information, understanding, and wisdom. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. The pursuit of knowledge is highly encouraged in Islam, as it is a means of attaining closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and fulfilling our purpose in life.

The word (tranquillity) "سَكِينَةُ" refers to a state of inner peace, serenity, and calmness. It is the result of attaining knowledge and understanding, which brings about a sense of contentment and harmony within oneself. The Quran beautifully describes the tranquillity that comes from knowledge in Surah Ar-Ra'd (13:28), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah, hearts are assured.

The word (forbearance) "حِلْمُ" refers to patience, tolerance, and the ability to control one's emotions and reactions in challenging situations. It is an essential quality that is cultivated through knowledge and understanding. The Quran emphasizes the importance of forbearance in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the true purpose of seeking knowledge is not merely to accumulate facts and information, but rather to attain tranquillity and forbearance. Knowledge should bring about a positive transformation in our character and behavior, enabling us to navigate the challenges of life with composure and patience.

When we acquire knowledge, it should lead us to a state of tranquillity, where we find solace and peace in the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This tranquillity is not limited to our spiritual well-being but extends to our mental and emotional well-being as well. It allows us to face difficulties with a calm and composed demeanor, knowing that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is with us and will guide us through every challenge.

Furthermore, knowledge should cultivate within us the virtue of forbearance. It equips us with the ability to exercise patience, even in the face of adversity and provocation. This quality enables us to respond to difficult situations and people with wisdom and restraint, rather than reacting impulsively or with anger. It allows us to maintain harmonious relationships and resolve conflicts in a peaceful manner.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the profound purpose of seeking knowledge. It reminds us that knowledge should not be pursued for the sake of mere intellectual curiosity, but rather to attain tranquillity and forbearance. By seeking knowledge and applying it in our lives, we can achieve inner peace, serenity, and the ability to navigate life's challenges with patience and wisdom. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us all with beneficial knowledge and grant us the tranquillity and forbearance that comes with it.
