Hadith #6648

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ عانَدَ النّاسَ مَقَتُوهُ۔

This can be translated as,

Whoever stubbornly opposes the people, they hate him.

Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (‘aanaada) "عانَدَ" in this Hadith means to stubbornly oppose or resist. It implies a deliberate and persistent refusal to conform to the views or actions of others. The word (maqatuhu) "مَقَتُوهُ" means to be hated or despised by the people. It signifies the negative consequences that arise from opposing others in a stubborn manner.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of unity and avoiding division among Muslims. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah says, (Quran 3:103)

And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.

This verse highlights the need for Muslims to unite and work together, rather than stubbornly opposing one another.

Furthermore, the Quran teaches us the importance of humility and avoiding arrogance. In Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah says, (Quran 49:11)

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them.

This verse reminds us not to belittle or oppose others, as they may possess qualities or virtues that we are unaware of. Stubbornly opposing others can lead to animosity and hatred, as mentioned in the Hadith.

The consequences of stubbornly opposing the people are not limited to the dislike and hatred of others. It can also lead to isolation and a lack of support. In Surah Al-Mumtahanah, Allah says, (Quran 60:1)

O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies, extending to them affection while they have disbelieved in what came to you of the truth.

This verse highlights the importance of aligning ourselves with those who share our beliefs and values, rather than stubbornly opposing them and seeking alliances with those who oppose us.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, emphasized the importance of unity and avoiding division among Muslims. He understood that stubbornly opposing others would only lead to hatred and animosity. By adhering to the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), we can strive for unity and harmony within the Muslim community.
