(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Jealous)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

When blessings are [openly] displayed, the enviers increase.

This Hadith highlights a profound aspect of human nature - the tendency for envy to arise when one witnesses the blessings and favors bestowed upon others.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (tazahur) "تَظاهُرِ" means

to be openly displayed

or

to be made apparent.

It refers to the act of manifesting or showing blessings, whether they are material possessions, talents, or any form of success. The word (ni'am) "النِّعَمِ" refers to blessings or favors that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows upon His creation.

To comprehend the wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the destructive nature of envy in Surah Al-Falaq, verse 5:

And from the evil of an envier when he envies.

This verse emphasizes the negative consequences of harboring envy within one's heart. Envy can lead to animosity, ill-will, and even harmful actions towards others.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 76, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the story of Qarun, a man who was blessed with immense wealth and possessions. However, his arrogance and envy towards others led to his downfall. This serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us of the dangers of envy and the importance of gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon us.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) sheds light on the human tendency to feel envious when witnessing the blessings of others. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious of this destructive trait and to strive for contentment and gratitude. Envy not only harms the envier, but it also creates a toxic environment within society, fostering jealousy and resentment.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound wisdom and knowledge, highlights the importance of self-reflection and self-improvement. Instead of allowing envy to consume us, we should focus on our own blessings and strive to better ourselves. This Hadith encourages Muslims to cultivate a mindset of gratitude, recognizing that every individual is blessed in their own unique way.

Moreover, this Hadith serves as a reminder for those who are blessed with abundance to be humble and compassionate towards those who may be less fortunate. It is a call to use our blessings as a means to uplift others and contribute positively to society. By doing so, we can counteract the negative effects of envy and promote a harmonious and supportive community.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the inherent human tendency towards envy when witnessing the blessings of others. It serves as a call to self-reflection, urging Muslims to cultivate gratitude and contentment in their hearts. By doing so, we can counteract the destructive nature of envy and foster a society based on compassion, humility, and support for one another. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) protect us from the pitfalls of envy and grant us the ability to appreciate and celebrate the blessings of others.
