(Ghurar al-Hikam: Speech And Speaking)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

بَيانُ الرَّجُلِ يُنْبِئُ عَنْ قُوَّةِ جَنانِهِ۔

This can be translated as,

The elocution of a man apprises of the strength of his heart.

Let us delve into the words of this profound Hadith to understand its deeper meaning. The word (bayān) "بَيانُ" refers to the expression or eloquence of a person. It encompasses the way one communicates, both verbally and non-verbally. It includes the choice of words, tone, body language, and overall delivery. The word (rajul) "رَجُلِ" signifies a man, but it can also be understood as a generic term for a human being.

The Hadith highlights the connection between one's speech and the strength of their heart. The term (quwwah) "قُوَّةِ" refers to strength, power, or might. In this context, it signifies the inner strength and resilience of a person's heart. The heart is not merely a physical organ but is also the center of one's emotions, intentions, and spirituality.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qasas (28:55),

And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, 'For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. Peace will be upon you; we seek not the ignorant.'

This verse emphasizes the importance of responding to negative speech with kindness and peace. It reflects the strength of one's heart to remain composed and not be swayed by the negativity around them. A person with a strong heart will not engage in futile arguments or respond with harsh words. Instead, they will choose their words wisely and strive for peace.

Another verse that sheds light on the Hadith is found in Surah Al-A'raf (7:199), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.

This verse encourages Muslims to be patient and forbearing in the face of ignorance and negativity. It teaches us to respond to ignorance with knowledge, to respond to hate with love, and to respond to harshness with kindness. By doing so, we demonstrate the strength of our hearts and the depth of our character.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his wisdom and knowledge, understood the significance of eloquence and its connection to the strength of one's heart. He exemplified this through his own words and actions. His sermons, letters, and sayings are a testament to his profound understanding of the Quran and his ability to communicate effectively.

When we reflect on the Hadith, we realize that it carries profound implications for our daily lives as Muslims. It reminds us to be mindful of our words and to strive for eloquence in our speech. Our words should reflect the strength of our hearts, which is rooted in faith, knowledge, and righteousness.

Furthermore, this Hadith serves as a reminder that our words have consequences. They can either build bridges or create divisions, spread love or sow hatred. By being mindful of our speech, we can contribute to a more harmonious and compassionate society.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that our speech is a reflection of the strength of our hearts. It emphasizes the importance of choosing our words wisely and striving for eloquence in our communication. By aligning our speech with the teachings of the Quran, we can embody the qualities of patience, wisdom, and compassion. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to speak with wisdom and sincerity, and may He purify our hearts from all negativity and ignorance.
