If falsehood dominates, it has [always] been so in the past, and if truth diminishes, that too has often occurred and may [again] happen. It is seldom that a thing lags behind and remains behind.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Important Events)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his noble family, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
If falsehood dominates, it has [always] been so in the past, and if truth diminishes, that too has often occurred and may [again] happen. It is seldom that a thing lags behind and remains behind.
Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith by examining the important words and concepts it entails. The word (batil) "باطِلُ" refers to falsehood, deceit, or that which is devoid of truth. (haqq) "حَقُّ" refers to truth, righteousness, and that which is in accordance with the divine guidance. The word (laqadiman) "لَقَديماً" means that falsehood dominating is not a new phenomenon, but rather something that has occurred in the past. Similarly, (larubba ma) "لَرُبَّما" signifies that the diminishing of truth is not uncommon and may happen again. Lastly, (laqallama) "لَقَلَّما" implies that it is rare for something to lag behind and remain behind.
To further understand the meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Anbiya (21:18),
Rather, We dash the truth upon falsehood, and it destroys it, and thereupon it departs. And for you is destruction from that which you describe.
This verse highlights the constant struggle between truth and falsehood, with truth ultimately prevailing and falsehood being destroyed. It reminds us that falsehood may dominate for a period, but it is temporary and will eventually be eradicated.
Another verse that aligns with the message of the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:81), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And say, 'Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart.'
This verse emphasizes the inherent nature of falsehood to dissipate and fade away, while truth remains steadfast and enduring.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to Muslims that throughout history, there have been instances where falsehood has prevailed and truth has diminished. However, this should not discourage us or lead us astray. Rather, it should strengthen our resolve to uphold and propagate the truth, even in the face of adversity.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, highlights the cyclical nature of truth and falsehood. Just as falsehood has dominated in the past, it may do so again. Similarly, truth may diminish, but it will eventually resurface. This Hadith encourages Muslims to remain steadfast in their pursuit of truth, regardless of the prevailing circumstances.
The consequences of disregarding this Hadith are significant. If we allow falsehood to dominate and truth to diminish, we risk losing our moral compass and straying from the path of righteousness. This can lead to societal corruption, injustice, and moral decay. Conversely, by actively seeking and upholding the truth, we contribute to the betterment of society, the establishment of justice, and the preservation of moral values.
Reflecting upon this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of seeking knowledge, understanding, and discernment. It is through knowledge that we can distinguish between truth and falsehood, and it is through understanding that we can navigate the complexities of life. By continuously seeking knowledge and reflecting upon the teachings of the Quran and the Ahl al-Bayt, we equip ourselves with the tools necessary to combat falsehood and uphold the truth.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a timeless reminder for Muslims to remain steadfast in upholding the truth, even in the face of prevailing falsehood. It emphasizes the cyclical nature of truth and falsehood throughout history and encourages us to seek knowledge and understanding. By doing so, we can contribute to the establishment of justice, the preservation of moral values, and the betterment of society as a whole. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us on the path of truth and grant us the wisdom to discern between right and wrong.
