(Ghurar al-Hikam: Disagreement)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Disputes demonstrate the foolishness of a person and do not increase his claim.

This Hadith emphasizes the negative consequences of engaging in disputes and highlights the lack of wisdom displayed by those who involve themselves in such conflicts.

Let us delve into the meaning of some key words in this Hadith. The word (مُخَاصَمَةُ) "mukhasamah" refers to disputes or arguments. It is derived from the root word (خَاصَمَ) "khasama", which means to argue or quarrel. The word (تُبْدِي) "tubdi" means to reveal or expose, while (سَفَهَ) "safah" refers to foolishness or ignorance. Finally, (حَقِّهِ) "haqq" translates to claim or right.

To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9),

And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make peace between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make peace between them with justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse highlights the importance of resolving conflicts and disputes among believers. It emphasizes the need for peaceful resolution and the pursuit of justice. Engaging in disputes, on the other hand, only serves to perpetuate ignorance and foolishness, as stated in the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).

Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises us in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46),

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse reminds us of the detrimental effects of disputes on our faith and strength. Engaging in arguments and conflicts weakens our resolve and diminishes our spiritual strength. It is through patience and obedience to Allah and His Messenger () that we can overcome such disputes and maintain our inner strength.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can see the practical implications of avoiding disputes. When we engage in arguments, we often lose sight of the bigger picture and become consumed by our own egos. This not only hinders our ability to find common ground and reach a resolution, but it also damages our relationships with others.

Moreover, disputes can lead to a breakdown in communication and understanding. Instead of fostering unity and harmony, they sow seeds of division and animosity. By refraining from disputes, we can maintain a peaceful and harmonious environment, allowing for constructive dialogue and cooperation.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to avoid engaging in disputes. It highlights the foolishness and ignorance that arise from such conflicts, while also emphasizing the importance of seeking peaceful resolutions. By following the guidance of the Quran and the teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), we can strive to maintain unity, foster understanding, and uphold justice in our interactions with others. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to avoid disputes and promote peace among ourselves.
