كَيْفَ يَصْبِرُ عَلى مُبايَنَةِ الأضْدادِ مَنْ لَمْ تُعِنْهُ الحِكْمَةُ۔
How can one be patient in disassociating from the enemies [of his felicity] when he is not aided by wisdom?.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Wisdom)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of wisdom in dealing with and staying patient in the face of opposition and adversity. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us that without wisdom, it becomes challenging to maintain patience and composure when facing those who oppose us.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by analyzing its key words and their implications. The word (sabr) "صَبْرُ", translated as patience, refers to the ability to remain steadfast and composed in the face of difficulties and trials. It is a virtue highly regarded in Islam and is often mentioned in the Quran. The word (mubayana) "مُبايَنَةِ" means disassociating or separating oneself from the enemies or those who oppose one's well-being. And finally, (al-adad) "الأضْدادِ" refers to the adversaries or opponents.
To understand the significance of wisdom in maintaining patience, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46),
And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
This ayah emphasizes the importance of obedience to Allah and His Messenger, which is an essential aspect of wisdom. When we follow the guidance of Allah and His Messenger, we acquire the wisdom to deal with adversities and challenges. Disputes and disagreements can weaken our resolve and diminish our strength, but by remaining patient and relying on wisdom, we can overcome such obstacles.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:54), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
These will be given their reward twice for what they patiently endured and [because] they avert evil through good, and from what We have provided them, they spend.
This verse highlights the reward for those who patiently endure and respond to evil with goodness. It is through wisdom that we can discern the appropriate response to adversity. By choosing to respond with kindness and goodness, we not only avert evil but also earn a double reward from Allah.
Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. He raises the question of how one can maintain patience in disassociating from their adversaries when they lack the aid of wisdom. This question prompts us to consider the consequences of acting without wisdom in such situations.
Without wisdom, we may be prone to react impulsively, allowing our emotions to dictate our actions. This can lead to further conflict and escalate the situation. However, with wisdom, we can assess the situation objectively, understand the motives of our adversaries, and respond in a manner that is guided by reason and righteousness.
Wisdom enables us to exercise restraint and choose the most appropriate course of action. It allows us to navigate through challenging circumstances with composure, seeking solutions that are in line with the teachings of Islam. By relying on wisdom, we can disassociate ourselves from our adversaries in a manner that is dignified, respectful, and in accordance with the principles of justice.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith highlights the indispensable role of wisdom in maintaining patience when facing opposition and adversity. Through wisdom, we can navigate through challenging circumstances, disassociate ourselves from our adversaries, and respond in a manner that upholds the principles of Islam. May Allah grant us the wisdom to remain patient and steadfast in the face of trials, and may He bless us with the ability to act with wisdom and righteousness.
