He (‘a) said about the one whom he censured: If he falls sick he regrets having abandoned the work and if he is healthy, he feels secure and delays the work. When he is called to cultivate for this world, he works and when he is called to cultivate for the Hereafter, he is lazy. If he becomes wealthy, he turns arrogant and falls into vice and if he becomes poor, he despairs and becomes weak. If a favour is done to him, he is ungrateful and if he does a favour, he lengthens it and makes it seem like [a great favour and] an obligation. If an evil deed presents itself to him, he commits it with the excuse of seeking repentance [for it later] but when he decides to repent, he delays it and persists in sinning. If he experiences wellbeing, he assumes that he has repented. If he is distressed, he thinks [ill of Allah] and doubts [in Him]. If he falls ill he devotes himself and turns repentantly [to Allah] but if he regains his health, he forgets and returns [to his evil ways] and becomes emboldened in his injustice towards the servants [of Allah]. When he is secure, he is allured by the temptations of this world, so he forgets the Hereafter and is negligent of the Resurrection [on the Day of Judgment].

Personal Reflection
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he provides a comprehensive analysis of the behavior and mindset of a person who is criticized. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) begins by highlighting the regret felt by such an individual when they fall sick, realizing that they have neglected their responsibilities and abandoned their duties. This regret stems from the understanding that time is precious and should not be wasted in idleness or negligence.
On the other hand, when this person is healthy, they feel secure and delay their work. This delay reflects a lack of urgency and a complacent attitude towards fulfilling their obligations. It demonstrates a lack of understanding of the transient nature of life and the importance of seizing opportunities when they arise.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then contrasts the individual's behavior when it comes to worldly pursuits versus the pursuit of the Hereafter. When called to cultivate for this world, they are diligent and hardworking, but when called to cultivate for the Hereafter, they become lazy and negligent. This highlights their misplaced priorities and their failure to recognize the eternal significance of the Hereafter compared to the fleeting nature of worldly possessions.
Furthermore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes the behavior of this person when faced with wealth or poverty. If they become wealthy, they turn arrogant and fall into vices, disregarding the principles of humility and gratitude. Conversely, if they become poor, they despair and become weak, failing to recognize the potential for growth and resilience that can be found in times of hardship.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then addresses the ingratitude of this individual. When a favor is done to them, they fail to show gratitude and appreciation. However, when they do a favor for others, they exaggerate its significance and expect to be praised and indebted. This behavior reflects a lack of humility and a self-centered approach to interactions with others.
The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further highlights the hypocrisy of this person when it comes to repentance. They commit sins with the intention of seeking repentance later, using it as an excuse to indulge in wrongdoing. However, when they decide to repent, they delay it and persist in their sinful behavior. This demonstrates a lack of sincerity and a disregard for the importance of repentance and seeking forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) also addresses the inconsistency in the behavior of this person when faced with different circumstances. When they experience well-being, they assume that they have repented and are on the right path. However, when they are distressed or face difficulties, they think ill of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and doubt His mercy and wisdom. This inconsistency in their faith and trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reveals a lack of conviction and a weak foundation in their relationship with the Almighty.
Furthermore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes the behavior of this person when they fall ill. They devote themselves to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and turn repentantly towards Him, recognizing their vulnerability and seeking His mercy. However, once they regain their health, they forget their previous devotion and return to their previous sinful ways. This inconsistency in their behavior reveals a lack of steadfastness and a failure to maintain their spiritual growth and connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Lastly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the distraction and negligence of this person when they are secure and allured by the temptations of this world. They forget the Hereafter and become negligent of the Resurrection and the ultimate accountability before Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This behavior reflects a lack of foresight and a failure to prioritize the eternal over the temporary.
In light of the Quran, this Hadith aligns with various verses that emphasize the importance of sincerity, gratitude, and steadfastness in one's faith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:139):
So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are [true] believers.
This verse reminds us of the importance of remaining steadfast in our faith and not being swayed by the challenges and temptations of this world.
Additionally, the Quran emphasizes the significance of gratitude in Surah Ibrahim (14:7):
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
This verse serves as a reminder to express gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon us and to recognize that ingratitude leads to spiritual decline and punishment.
Furthermore, the Quran highlights the importance of repentance and seeking forgiveness in Surah An-Nisa (4:17-18):
Indeed, Allah accepts repentance only from those who do evil in ignorance and then repent soon after. It is those to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness, and Allah is ever Knowing and Wise. But repentance is not [accepted] of those who [continue to] do evil deeds up until, when death comes to one of them, he says, 'Indeed, I have repented now,' or of those who die while they are disbelievers. For them We have prepared a painful punishment.
These verses emphasize the need for sincere repentance and the consequences of delaying or insincere repentance.
In conclusion, this Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) provides a profound analysis of the behavior and mindset of an individual who is criticized. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect on their own actions and strive for consistency, sincerity, gratitude, and steadfastness in their faith. By aligning our actions with the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt, we can strive to become better individuals and fulfill our responsibilities towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and our fellow human beings. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody these qualities and seek His pleasure in all aspects of our lives.
