(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Judicious)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his family, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

الحازم من لم يشغله غرور دنياه عن العمل لآخراه

which translates to

The judicious person is one who is not too preoccupied with the deceptions of his world to work for his Hereafter.

Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran. The key words in this Hadith are (the judicious person) "الحازم", (deceptions) "غرور", (his world) "دنياه", (work) "العمل", and (his Hereafter) "آخراه".

The term "الحازم" refers to a person who possesses firmness and determination in their actions. It signifies someone who is resolute and unwavering in their pursuit of righteousness. This quality is highly commendable and is exemplified by individuals who prioritize their spiritual journey over worldly distractions.

The word "غرور" refers to the deceptions and illusions of this world. It encompasses the allurements and temptations that divert one's attention from the path of righteousness. These deceptions can manifest in various forms, such as material possessions, wealth, fame, and worldly desires. They have the potential to captivate and consume individuals, hindering their progress towards the Hereafter.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that the judicious person is one who is not preoccupied or captivated by these deceptions. They do not allow the glitter and glamour of this world to distract them from their ultimate purpose in life - seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

To further understand the importance of prioritizing the Hereafter, let us turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:201):

Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

This verse highlights the balanced approach that Muslims should adopt. It acknowledges the importance of seeking goodness in this world, but also emphasizes the significance of preparing for the eternal life in the Hereafter. The judicious person understands this balance and strives to strike it in their actions and priorities.

Another verse that aligns with the teachings of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Kahf (18:46):

Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

This verse reminds us that the adornments of this world, such as wealth and children, are temporary and fleeting. They may bring temporary pleasure and satisfaction, but the enduring good deeds performed for the sake of Allah are far superior in reward and eternal value. The judicious person understands this truth and focuses their efforts on actions that will benefit them in the Hereafter.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their actions and intentions. It urges us to be vigilant and not allow the deceptions of this world to divert us from our ultimate goal of attaining success in the Hereafter. By remaining steadfast and resolute in our pursuit of righteousness, we can ensure that we are not swayed by the temporary allurements of this world.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of being judicious and not letting the deceptions of this world hinder our progress towards the Hereafter. It encourages us to prioritize our actions and intentions, seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) above all else. By doing so, we can attain true success and eternal happiness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us the strength to overcome the distractions of this world.
