عِندَ نُزُولِ الشَّدائدِ يُجَرَّبُ حِفاظُ الإخوانِ۔
It is in times of tribulation that the protection of brethren is put to test.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his family, his companions, and the righteous successors.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
عِندَ نُزُولِ الشَّدائدِ يُجَرَّبُ حِفَاظُ الإخْوَانِ
which translates to
It is in times of tribulation that the protection of brethren is put to test.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (nuzooli) "نُزُولِ" means "descent" or "arrival" and refers to the occurrence or onset of a difficult situation or calamity. (ash-shada'id) "الشَّدَائِدِ" refers to trials, hardships, or tribulations that individuals may face. (yujarabu) "يُجَرَّبُ" means "to be tested" or
to be put to trial.
Lastly, (hifathu al-ikhwan) "حِفَاظُ الإخْوَانِ" refers to the protection or safeguarding of brethren.
To understand the connotation of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155):
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.
This verse highlights that trials and tribulations are a part of life, and they serve as a test for believers. It is during these difficult times that the true nature of our relationships and the strength of our bonds are revealed. The Hadith emphasizes the importance of protecting and supporting our brethren during times of hardship.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) understood the significance of unity and mutual support among Muslims. His knowledge and wisdom allowed him to recognize that it is during times of tribulation that the true character of individuals is tested. In such moments, the protection and care we extend to our fellow believers become a measure of our faith and commitment.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) also reminds us in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10):
The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.
This verse emphasizes the importance of unity and reconciliation among believers, especially during times of conflict or disagreement. It is during these challenging moments that the protection and support of brethren become crucial.
The consequences of failing this test of protecting our brethren during times of tribulation can be severe. It can lead to divisions, animosity, and the weakening of the Muslim community as a whole. On the other hand, successfully passing this test strengthens the bonds of brotherhood, fosters unity, and brings about the mercy and blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of standing together as Muslims, supporting and protecting one another during times of difficulty. It is through our actions and deeds that we demonstrate our true faith and commitment to Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to pass this test and fulfill our duty of safeguarding our brethren.
