مَنْ خالَفَ عِلْمَهُ عَظُمَتْ جَريمَتُهُ وإثْمُهُ۔
One who acts against his knowledge, his crime and sin become grave.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his family, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
One who acts against his knowledge, his crime and sin become grave.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of acting in accordance with one's knowledge and the consequences that arise from going against it.
Let us first examine the key words in this Hadith. The word (khalafa) "خالَفَ" means to go against or contradict. (ilmahu) "عِلْمَهُ" refers to one's knowledge or understanding. (azhumat) "عَظُمَتْ" signifies the gravity or severity of the situation. And finally, (jarimatuhu wa ithmuhu) "جَريمَتُهُ وإثْمُهُ" refers to one's crime and sin.
To understand the essence of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 283,
And if you are on a journey and cannot find a scribe, then a security deposit [should be] taken. And if one of you entrusts another, then let him who is entrusted discharge his trust [faithfully] and let him fear Allah, his Lord. And do not conceal testimony, for whoever conceals it - his heart is indeed sinful, and Allah is Knowing of what you do.
This verse highlights the importance of fulfilling one's responsibilities and acting honestly. When a person goes against their knowledge and fails to fulfill their obligations, they commit a sin and their crime becomes grave. By not acting in accordance with their knowledge, they are betraying the trust placed upon them, whether it be in matters of testimony, financial transactions, or any other aspect of life.
Another verse that supports the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 2, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
This verse emphasizes the importance of cooperating in righteousness and avoiding sin. When a person acts against their knowledge, they are cooperating with sin and aggression, which goes against the teachings of Islam. It is essential for Muslims to fear Allah and strive to act in accordance with their knowledge, avoiding any actions that may lead to sin or aggression.
The consequences of acting against one's knowledge are far-reaching. Not only does it lead to committing a sin, but it also tarnishes one's character and integrity. When a person knowingly goes against what they know to be right, they are disregarding the guidance of Allah and the teachings of Islam. This can have severe consequences on their spiritual well-being and their relationship with Allah.
Furthermore, acting against one's knowledge can have negative effects on society as a whole. When individuals fail to act in accordance with their knowledge, it can lead to corruption, injustice, and the erosion of trust within communities. It is the duty of every Muslim to act responsibly and ethically, using their knowledge to promote goodness and justice in society.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of seeking knowledge and acting upon it. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, and he emphasized the significance of knowledge throughout his life. By acting in accordance with our knowledge, we can strive to become better Muslims and contribute positively to our communities.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the grave consequences that arise from acting against our knowledge. It is essential for Muslims to seek knowledge, act responsibly, and avoid going against what they know to be right. By doing so, we can uphold the teachings of Islam, maintain our integrity, and contribute to a just and righteous society. May Allah guide us all to act in accordance with our knowledge and protect us from the consequences of going against it.
