(Ghurar al-Hikam: Honour And The Honourable)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

الشَّريفُ مَنْ شَرُفَتْ خِلالُهُ۔

This can be translated as:

The honourable person is the one whose attributes are honourable.

This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of possessing noble qualities and characteristics.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran. The word (sharif) "شَرِيفُ" refers to someone who is noble, honorable, and distinguished. It encompasses a person's inner qualities, actions, and behavior. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is teaching us that true honor lies not in external appearances or social status, but in the virtuous attributes that one possesses.

The Quranic teachings reinforce this concept of true honor being rooted in noble qualities. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse highlights that true nobility and honor are not determined by one's lineage, wealth, or social status, but rather by the level of righteousness and piety one possesses. It is the inner qualities of a person, such as their faith, integrity, kindness, and humility, that truly define their honor in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qalam (68:4), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the Prophet Muhammad () as a person of great moral character:

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

The Prophet Muhammad () exemplified the highest level of honor and nobility through his impeccable character, honesty, and compassion towards others.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the gate to the city of knowledge, possessed immense wisdom and knowledge. His teachings and actions were a reflection of his noble attributes. He demonstrated unwavering loyalty, justice, and bravery throughout his life. His knowledge and understanding of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet () were unparalleled.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for all Muslims to strive for inner excellence and to cultivate noble attributes within themselves. It encourages us to focus on developing qualities such as honesty, humility, patience, forgiveness, and empathy. These qualities not only bring honor to an individual but also contribute to the betterment of society as a whole.

When we embody these noble attributes, we become a source of inspiration and guidance for others. Our actions and behavior leave a lasting impact on those around us. By striving to be honorable individuals, we contribute to the establishment of a just and compassionate society, in line with the teachings of Islam.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that true honor lies in possessing noble attributes and qualities. It emphasizes that external appearances and social status are not the true measures of honor. Rather, it is the inner character and righteousness that define a person's true nobility. Let us strive to cultivate these noble qualities within ourselves and inspire others to do the same, for it is through embodying these attributes that we attain true honor in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us the ability to be honorable individuals.
