Trusting in Allah is the best pillar [of support].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Putting Trust In Allah)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "التَّوَكُّلُ خَيْرُ عِماد۔" This can be translated as,
Trusting in Allah is the best pillar [of support].
In this enlightening Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of placing our complete reliance and trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The word (tawakkul) "تَوَكُّل" comes from the root word (wakala) "وَكَلَ", which means to rely, trust, or depend on someone or something. Tawakkul is the act of entrusting one's affairs to Allah, knowing that He is the ultimate source of all power and control. It is an essential aspect of faith and a means to attain tranquility and peace of mind.
The word (khayr) "خَيْرُ" means "good" or "best." It signifies that trusting in Allah is not just a good or beneficial action, but it is the best and most excellent course of action one can take. It is the foundation upon which all other pillars of faith and righteous deeds are built.
To understand the significance of tawakkul, we can turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of relying on Him alone. In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah says, (Quran 8:61)
And put your trust in Allah if you are believers indeed
This verse highlights the connection between true faith and trust in Allah. It implies that genuine belief in Allah necessitates complete reliance on Him.
Furthermore, in Surah At-Talaq, Allah assures us, (Quran 65:3)
And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him
This verse assures us that when we place our trust in Allah, He will take care of our needs and provide for us. It demonstrates the profound impact of tawakkul on our lives, as it brings about Allah's divine assistance and support.
Trusting in Allah has numerous benefits and consequences in our lives. Firstly, it strengthens our relationship with Allah and deepens our faith. When we trust in Allah, we acknowledge His infinite wisdom, power, and mercy. We recognize that He is the ultimate controller of all affairs and that everything happens according to His divine plan.
Secondly, tawakkul brings about inner peace and tranquility. When we trust in Allah, we let go of our worries and anxieties, knowing that He is in control. We understand that whatever challenges we face, Allah is with us, guiding and protecting us. This mindset frees us from the burden of excessive stress and allows us to face difficulties with patience and resilience.
Thirdly, tawakkul leads to a sense of contentment and gratitude. When we trust in Allah, we accept His decree and are grateful for the blessings He has bestowed upon us. We understand that everything that happens is ultimately for our own good, even if we may not comprehend it at the moment. This attitude of gratitude enhances our overall well-being and fosters a positive outlook on life.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of placing our complete trust in Allah. Tawakkul is not merely a good action, but it is the best pillar of support that we can rely upon. By trusting in Allah, we strengthen our faith, attain inner peace, and experience the countless blessings that come from relying on the All-Powerful and All-Merciful Creator. May Allah grant us the ability to truly trust in Him and may He be our ultimate support and guide in all aspects of our lives.
