(Ghurar al-Hikam: Establishing Ties And Relations)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

وَصُولُ النّاسِ مَنْ وَصَلَ مَنْ قَطَعَهُ۔

This can be translated as,

The one who consociates with the people is he who establishes ties with the one who cuts him off.

Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of the Quran. The word (consociation) "وَصُولُ" refers to establishing and maintaining strong connections and relationships with others. It signifies the importance of fostering unity, harmony, and brotherhood among Muslims. On the other hand, the word (cuts him off) "قَطَعَهُ" refers to severing ties and breaking relationships with others.

The Quran emphasizes the significance of maintaining strong bonds with fellow Muslims. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

This verse highlights the importance of resolving conflicts and disputes among believers, emphasizing the need for unity and reconciliation.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:53), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands,

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse encourages Muslims to choose their words wisely and speak in a manner that promotes harmony and understanding. It warns against falling into the trap of Satan, who seeks to create division and discord among believers.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement emphasizes the importance of maintaining ties with those who have severed connections with us. It teaches us that true consociation lies in reaching out to those who have cut us off, rather than retaliating or severing ties in return. This approach reflects the noble character of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who was known for his wisdom, patience, and forgiveness.

By establishing ties with those who have cut us off, we demonstrate our commitment to the principles of Islam and the teachings of the Quran. We strive to emulate the example set by the Prophet Muhammad () and his noble companions, who forgave and reconciled with their enemies. This approach not only promotes unity within the Muslim community but also serves as a means of softening hearts, fostering understanding, and ultimately leading to the reconciliation of differences.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also highlights the importance of selflessness and putting others before ourselves. It encourages us to rise above personal grievances and extend a hand of friendship and reconciliation, even to those who have wronged us. This act of forgiveness and reconciliation not only benefits the individuals involved but also contributes to the overall well-being and unity of the Muslim ummah.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of consociation and establishing ties with those who have cut us off. It reminds us of the Quranic teachings that emphasize unity, forgiveness, and reconciliation among Muslims. By following the example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can strive to create a harmonious and united Muslim community, embodying the true spirit of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all in our efforts to establish and maintain strong bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood.
