— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Injustice And Oppression)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

إيّاكَ والظُّلْمَ، فَمَنْ ظَلَمَ كَرُهَتْ أيّامُهُ۔

This can be translated as,

Keep away from injustice for whoever acts unjustly, his days are abhorred.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this beautiful saying. The word (dhulm) "ظُلْم" in Arabic refers to injustice, oppression, or wrongdoing. It encompasses any act that transgresses the rights of others, whether it be through physical, emotional, or financial harm. It is a grave sin that goes against the principles of justice and fairness.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, warns us to stay away from injustice. This advice is not only for the benefit of others but also for our own well-being. The Imam highlights the consequences of acting unjustly by stating,

فَمَنْ ظَلَمَ كَرُهَتْ أيّامُهُ۔

This can be translated as,

his days are abhorred.

To understand the significance of this warning, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 205,

And when he turns away [from you], his effort in the land is to cause corruption therein and to destroy crops and animals. And Allah does not like corruption.

This verse emphasizes that Allah dislikes those who spread corruption and injustice in the world.

Furthermore, in Surah Ash-Shura, Ayah 42, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is [due] from Allah. Indeed, He does not like wrongdoers.

This verse highlights that Allah does not favor wrongdoers and that they will face the consequences of their actions.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder that injustice not only harms others but also brings misery upon the one who commits it. When a person engages in unjust actions, their days become abhorred. This means that their life becomes filled with difficulties, hardships, and a sense of unease. They may face constant challenges and obstacles that hinder their progress and bring them distress.

Moreover, the consequences of injustice extend beyond this world. In Surah Al-Hajj, Ayah 38, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,

Indeed, Allah defends those who have believed. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone treacherous and ungrateful.

This verse assures us that Allah is the ultimate protector of the believers and that He does not favor those who act treacherously and ungratefully.

Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) words, we understand that injustice not only harms others but also brings about negative consequences for the perpetrator. It is a path that leads to a life filled with difficulties and displeasure. As Muslims, we are called to uphold justice and fairness in all aspects of our lives, treating others with kindness, compassion, and respect. By doing so, we not only fulfill our duty towards our fellow human beings but also ensure a life of tranquility and blessings for ourselves. May Allah guide us all to follow the path of justice and righteousness.
