There is no humiliation greater than covetousness.
لاذُلَّ أعْظَمُ مِنَ الطَّمَعِ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
A little covetousness corrupts a lot of piety.
يَسيرُ الطَّمَعِ يُفْسِدُ كَثيرَ الوَرَعِ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Cupidity corrupts piety and licentiousness [corrupts] God-wariness.
يُفْسِدُ الطَّمَعُ الوَرَعَ، والفُجُورُ التَّقْوى۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Freedom from the captivity of covetousness is [gained] by acquiring loss of hope [in people].
اَلخَلاصُ مِنْ أسْرِ الطَّمَعِ بِاكْتِسابِ اليَأسِ۔

Covetousness is one of the two abasements.
اَلطَّمَعُ أحَدُ الذُلَّيْنِ۔

One who clings to covetousness is deprived of piety.
مَنْ لَزِمَ الطَّمَعَ عَدِمَ الوَرَعَ۔

Whoever takes covetousness as his attire, it makes him swallow failure repeatedly.
مَنِ اتَّخَذَ الطَّمَعَ شِعاراً جَرَّعَتْهُ الخَيْبَةُ مِراراً۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
One who entertains the hope of [fulfilment of] false cupidity, the grant [which he receives] belies...
مَنْ حَدَّثَ نَفْسَهُ بِكاذِبِ الطَّمَعِ كَذَّبَتْهُ العَطِيَّةُ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
One who does not purify his soul from the lowliness of the coveted has actually abased himself and...
مَنْ لَمْ يُنَزِّهْ نَفْسَهُ عَنْ دَناءَةِ المَطامِعِ فَقَدْ أذَلَّ نَفْسَهُ، وهُوَ فِي الآخِرَةِ أذَلُّ وأَخْزى۔

قَليلُ الطَّمَعِ يُفْسِدُ كَثيرَ الوَرَعِ۔

Excessive covetousness is the symbol of lack of piety.
كَثْرَةُ الطَّمَعِ عُنْوانُ قِلَّةِ الوَرَعِ۔

One who is possessed by covetousness is humiliated.
مَنْ مَلَكَهُ الطَّمَعُ ذَلَّ۔

One who clings to covetousness is deprived of piety.
مَنْ لَزِمَ الطَّمَعَ عَدِمَ الوَرَعَ۔

One whose covetousness increases, his downfall becomes greater.
مَنْ كَثُرَ طَمَعُهُ عَظُمَ مَصْرَعُهُ۔

Every coveter is a prisoner [of his desires].
كُلُّ طامِع أسيرٌ۔

How many a coveter covets pardon.
كَمْ مِنْ طامِع بِالصَّفْحِ عَنْهُ۔

One who covets becomes abased and undergoes hardship.
مَنْ طَمِعَ ذَلَّ وتَعَنّى۔

There is none more abased than a coveter.
لا أذَلَّ مِنْ طامِع۔

The most indigent of people is the coveter.
أفْقَرُ النّاسِ الطّامِعُ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
The most humiliated of all people is the greedy, suspicious, coveter.
أعْظَمُ النّاسِ ذُلاًّ الطّامِعُ الحَريصُ المُريبُ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
The coveter is forever abased.
اَلطّامِعُ أبَداً ذَليلٌ۔

The coveter is forever in the shackles of disgrace.
