— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Etiquette)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Good etiquette is the best supporter and finest companion.

This impactful saying emphasizes the importance of good manners and etiquette in our lives as Muslims. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word "husn" in Arabic refers to "good" or "excellent," while "adab" means "etiquette" or "manners." Thus, the Hadith highlights the virtue and excellence of having good manners. It teaches us that possessing good etiquette is not only praiseworthy but also serves as a source of support and companionship in our journey through life.

The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the significance of good manners and etiquette. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them.

This verse reminds us to refrain from mocking or belittling others, highlighting the importance of treating everyone with respect and dignity.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Isra (17:53), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands Prophet Muhammad () to say,

Tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse emphasizes the importance of choosing our words wisely and speaking in a manner that is kind and beneficial. It reminds us that good etiquette in speech can help prevent conflicts and maintain harmonious relationships.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also highlights the practical benefits of good manners. When we possess good etiquette, we become a source of support for others. Our kind words and actions can uplift and encourage those around us. By treating others with respect and compassion, we create an environment of harmony and unity within our communities.

Furthermore, good etiquette serves as a companion throughout our lives. When we consistently display good manners, it becomes a part of our character and guides our interactions with others. It helps us navigate through various situations and enables us to build strong and lasting relationships.

The consequences of neglecting good etiquette are evident in society today. Lack of manners leads to conflicts, misunderstandings, and a breakdown of relationships. It creates an atmosphere of negativity and hostility. However, by embodying good manners, we can counteract these negative effects and contribute to a more harmonious and compassionate society.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the immense wisdom and knowledge possessed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). As the cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad (), Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his exceptional character and deep understanding of Islam. His words serve as a guide for Muslims of all generations, urging us to prioritize good manners and etiquette in our daily lives.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that good etiquette is not only virtuous but also serves as a source of support and companionship. It reminds us to treat others with respect, kindness, and compassion. By embodying good manners, we can contribute to a more harmonious and compassionate society, reflecting the teachings of the Quran and the noble example of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate and uphold good etiquette in all aspects of our lives.
