قَدْ تُخْدَعُ الرِّجالُ۔
At times people are deceived.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Human Being)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "قَدْ تُخْدَعُ الرِّجالُ۔" which translates to
At times people are deceived.
This concise statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) holds profound wisdom and serves as a reminder for all Muslims.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us first examine the key words used. The word (tukhda'u) "تُخْدَعُ" is derived from the root word (khada'a) "خَدَعَ", which means to deceive, trick, or mislead. It implies the act of someone being led astray or being made to believe something that is not true. The word (ar-rijal) "الرِّجالُ" refers to people in general, encompassing both men and women.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the deception that can occur in various aspects of life. For example, in Surah Al-Imran (3:69), Allah says,
Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam. And those who were given the Scripture did not differ except after knowledge had come to them - out of jealous animosity between themselves. And whoever disbelieves in the verses of Allah, then indeed, Allah is swift in [taking] account.
This verse highlights how people can be deceived by their own desires, leading them to deviate from the true path.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:49), Allah says,
And when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease said, 'Their religion has deluded those [Muslims].' But whoever relies upon Allah - then indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.
This verse emphasizes that even within the Muslim community, there can be individuals who deceive others by distorting the true teachings of Islam.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious and vigilant against deception in all aspects of life. It highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding the true teachings of Islam to avoid being led astray. It also emphasizes the need for critical thinking and discernment, as well as relying on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for guidance and protection.
In practical terms, this Hadith encourages Muslims to be aware of false ideologies, misleading information, and deceptive individuals who may try to manipulate or exploit them. It reminds us to verify the authenticity of information before accepting it and to seek guidance from reliable sources, such as the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
Moreover, this Hadith also serves as a reminder of the importance of self-reflection and self-accountability. It prompts Muslims to examine their own actions, intentions, and beliefs to ensure that they are not deceiving themselves or others. It encourages us to constantly evaluate our choices and align them with the principles of Islam, seeking sincerity and truthfulness in all aspects of our lives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) "قَدْ تُخْدَعُ الرِّجالُ۔" reminds Muslims of the potential for deception in various aspects of life. It urges us to seek knowledge, be vigilant, and rely on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for guidance and protection. By being aware of the potential for deception and striving to align our actions with the teachings of Islam, we can safeguard ourselves from being led astray and ensure that we remain on the path of righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and discernment to recognize and avoid deception, and may He guide us all to the straight path.
