مُرُوَّةُ الرَّجُلِ فِي احْتِمالِ عَثَراتِ إخْوانِهِ۔
A person’s magnanimity is in his tolerance of his brothers’ mistakes.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Magnanimity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
مُرُوَّةُ الرَّجُلِ فِي احْتِمالِ عَثَراتِ إخْوانِهِ۔
This can be translated as:
A person’s magnanimity is in his tolerance of his brothers’ mistakes.
Let us delve into the words of this profound Hadith and explore its meaning in light of the Quran. The key words in this Hadith are (muruwwah) "مُرُوَّةُ", which can be translated as magnanimity or nobility, and (ihtimal) "احْتِمالِ", which means tolerance or forbearance.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of forgiveness, patience, and tolerance in numerous verses. For example, in Surah Al-Imran (3:134), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
Those who spend [in Allah's cause] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse highlights the virtue of restraining anger and pardoning others, which aligns with the concept of tolerance mentioned in the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames.
This verse emphasizes the importance of not ridiculing or insulting others, which requires tolerance and magnanimity towards our fellow Muslims.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of tolerating the mistakes of our brothers and sisters in faith. It reminds us that true magnanimity lies in our ability to overlook the faults and errors of others, rather than holding grudges or seeking revenge. This teaching is in line with the Quranic principle of forgiveness and forbearance.
Practicing tolerance towards our fellow Muslims has numerous motivations and consequences. Firstly, it fosters unity and harmony within the Muslim community. When we are able to overlook the mistakes of others and treat them with kindness and understanding, it creates an environment of love and compassion. This unity is essential for the progress and strength of the ummah.
Secondly, practicing tolerance allows for personal growth and development. When we choose to forgive and be patient with others, we are able to cultivate qualities such as humility, empathy, and self-control. These qualities are highly valued in Islam and contribute to our spiritual growth and character development.
Conversely, the consequences of not practicing tolerance can be detrimental. Holding grudges and seeking revenge can lead to division and animosity within the Muslim community. It can create a toxic environment where trust and brotherhood are eroded. Additionally, harboring negative feelings towards others can have a negative impact on our own mental and emotional well-being.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we are reminded of the importance of embodying the noble qualities of magnanimity and tolerance. By practicing forgiveness and patience, we contribute to the unity and strength of the Muslim ummah. Let us strive to be individuals who are known for their ability to overlook the mistakes of others and treat them with kindness and understanding. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to embody these virtues in our daily lives.
