أكْرِهْ نَفْسَكَ عَلَى الفَضائِلِ، فَإنَّ الرَّذائِلَ أنْتَ مَطْبُوعٌ عَلَيْها۔
Compel yourself to [acquire] virtues, for indeed you have a natural propensity for vices.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Virtues And Vices)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of self-discipline and striving towards virtuous actions. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to compel ourselves to acquire virtues, as our natural inclination tends to be towards vices.
Let us delve deeper into the key words used in this Hadith. The word (akrih) "أكْرِهْ" means to compel or force oneself. It implies exerting effort and overcoming one's own desires and weaknesses. The word (nafsak) "نَفْسَكَ" refers to one's own self or soul. It represents the inner self, including the desires, inclinations, and tendencies of an individual. The word (fada'il) "فَضائِلِ" refers to virtues or good deeds. These are actions that are praiseworthy and bring one closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of self-discipline and striving towards righteousness. In Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3), Allah says,
By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
This verse highlights the necessity of actively engaging in virtuous actions and encouraging others to do the same.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286), Allah says,
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear...
This verse reminds us that we have the capacity to overcome our weaknesses and inclinations towards vices. It is within our power to compel ourselves towards virtuous actions, even though it may require effort and struggle.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice to compel ourselves towards virtues is rooted in his profound knowledge and understanding of human nature. As the cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed deep insight into the human psyche. He recognized that while we may have a natural inclination towards vices, we also have the potential to rise above them through self-discipline and conscious effort.
By compelling ourselves towards virtues, we are able to align our actions with the teachings of Islam and the guidance of the Quran. This self-discipline allows us to overcome our base desires and elevate our character. It leads to personal growth, spiritual development, and a closer relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice has profound consequences for our lives as Muslims. When we actively strive towards virtues, we become a source of inspiration and guidance for others. Our actions speak louder than words, and by embodying the teachings of Islam, we can positively influence those around us.
Moreover, compelling ourselves towards virtues helps us resist the temptations of this world and protects us from falling into sinful behavior. It strengthens our willpower and enables us to make choices that are pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Through this self-discipline, we are able to purify our souls and attain spiritual excellence.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of self-discipline and striving towards virtues. By compelling ourselves to acquire virtues, we can overcome our natural inclination towards vices and align our actions with the teachings of Islam. This self-discipline leads to personal growth, spiritual development, and a closer relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and determination to compel ourselves towards virtues and protect us from the temptations of this world.
