مَنْ مَلَكَتْهُ نَفْسُهُ ذَلَّ قَدْرُهُ۔
Whoever is controlled by his [carnal] soul, his status is lowered.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Whoever is controlled by his [carnal] soul, his status is lowered.
Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in the light of the Quran.
The key word in this Hadith is (his soul) "نَفْسُهُ", which refers to the carnal desires and base instincts that reside within every human being. This refers to the lower self or the ego, which often leads individuals astray from the path of righteousness. It is important to note that the soul itself is not inherently evil, but it is the unchecked desires and passions that can corrupt it.
The word (lowered) "ذَلَّ" in the Hadith signifies a decrease in one's spiritual and moral standing. When a person allows their carnal desires to control them, they become enslaved to their own whims and desires. This leads to a degradation of character, a loss of self-control, and a distancing from the higher spiritual stations that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon us.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of self-control and the consequences of succumbing to our base desires. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Yusuf (12:53),
And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy.
This verse highlights the inherent inclination of the soul towards evil and the need for divine intervention to overcome its negative influence.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qiyamah (75:2-3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,
Does man think that We will not assemble his bones? Yes, We are Able to put together in perfect order the very tips of his fingers.
This verse reminds us of the Day of Judgment when all of our actions, including those driven by our carnal desires, will be accounted for. It serves as a reminder that we should not allow our lower selves to dictate our actions, as we will be held accountable for them.
The exegesis of this Hadith highlights the importance of self-control and the dangers of allowing our carnal desires to control us. When we become slaves to our own whims and desires, our spiritual and moral status is diminished. We lose sight of our higher purpose and become disconnected from the divine guidance that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon us through the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the importance of self-awareness and self-control. By recognizing and restraining our base desires, we can elevate our status and attain spiritual growth. This requires constant vigilance, self-reflection, and seeking guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their lower selves and to strive for self-control. By resisting the temptations of our carnal desires, we can elevate our spiritual and moral status and align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to overcome our lower selves and attain spiritual excellence.
