(Ghurar al-Hikam: Speech And Speaking)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The most accurate shot is speech that is prudent.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening saying and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (aswab) "أصْوَبُ" in this Hadith refers to accuracy and precision. It signifies hitting the target with utmost accuracy, leaving no room for error. The word (ramyi) "الرَّمْيِ" means shooting or throwing, and it symbolizes the act of expressing oneself through speech. Finally, (al-qawl al-musib) "القَوْلُ المُصيبُ" translates to prudent speech, which is characterized by wisdom, thoughtfulness, and careful consideration.

The Quran emphasizes the importance of using speech wisely and prudently. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:83)

And speak to people good [words]

This verse encourages Muslims to choose their words carefully and to use speech that is beneficial, kind, and truthful. Prudent speech is not only accurate but also has a positive impact on others, fostering understanding, harmony, and righteousness.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us, (Quran 17:36)

And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned

This verse highlights the importance of speaking only when we have knowledge and understanding of the subject matter. Prudent speech requires us to refrain from spreading rumors, engaging in gossip, or making baseless claims. It urges us to seek knowledge and verify information before expressing our opinions.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement emphasizes the significance of choosing our words carefully. Prudent speech involves considering the consequences of our words before uttering them. It requires us to reflect on the potential impact our words may have on others, as well as on our own reputation and character.

For example, when faced with a situation where someone has wronged us, prudent speech encourages us to respond with wisdom and restraint. Instead of reacting impulsively and engaging in hurtful or offensive speech, we should choose our words wisely, aiming for reconciliation and understanding. This aligns with the Quranic guidance to (Quran 41:34)

repel [evil] by that which is better

and to (Quran 7:199) "forgive and overlook".

Prudent speech also extends to our interactions with others in society. It requires us to be mindful of the impact our words may have on the vulnerable or marginalized members of our community. The Quran reminds us to (Quran 2:83)

speak to people good [words]

emphasizing the importance of using our speech to uplift, encourage, and support others.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) impactful Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for accuracy and precision in their speech. By choosing our words wisely, considering their impact, and aligning them with the teachings of the Quran, we can foster a culture of understanding, compassion, and righteousness within our communities. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to speak with prudence and accuracy.
