If you are patient then things will transpire as ordained and you will be rewarded, and if you are agitated then things will transpire as ordained and you will bear the burden of sin.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

If you are patient then things will transpire as ordained and you will be rewarded, and if you are agitated then things will transpire as ordained and you will bear the burden of sin.

This thought-provoking Hadith highlights the importance of patience and its consequences in the life of a Muslim.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (صَبَرْتَ) "sabr" refers to patience, which encompasses enduring hardships, trials, and tribulations with steadfastness and perseverance. It is a virtue highly emphasized in the Quran and Sunnah. The word (جَرَى) "jara" means to transpire or happen, indicating that the outcomes of our actions are predetermined by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The word (مَأْجُورٌ) "majoor" means rewarded, signifying that if one remains patient, they will be rewarded by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for their steadfastness. On the other hand, the word (جَزَعْتَ) "jazaa" means agitation or restlessness, implying a lack of patience. The word (مَأْزُورٌ) "mazoor" means burdened with sin, indicating that those who lack patience will bear the consequences of their impatience.

To further understand the significance of patience in Islam, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153):

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse emphasizes the importance of patience as a means of seeking assistance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in times of difficulty. It reminds us that Allah is always with those who remain patient and steadfast.

Another verse that supports the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is found in Surah Al-Infitar (82:5-7), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

O mankind, indeed you are laboring toward your Lord with [great] exertion and will meet it. Then as for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will be judged with an easy account and return to his people in happiness. But as for he who is given his record behind his back, he will cry out for destruction.

These verses highlight the consequences of our actions and the importance of patience in determining our ultimate fate. Those who remain patient and steadfast in their obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will be rewarded with an easy reckoning and eternal happiness. Conversely, those who lack patience and engage in sinful behavior will bear the burden of their actions and cry out for destruction.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to cultivate patience in their lives. It teaches us that our actions have consequences, and that by remaining patient in the face of trials and tribulations, we can attain rewards in this life and the hereafter. Conversely, impatience and agitation lead to sin and its burdensome consequences.

Reflecting upon this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of controlling our emotions and maintaining a calm and patient demeanor. By doing so, we align ourselves with the divine decree of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and open ourselves to His mercy and blessings. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to remain patient in all circumstances and protect us from the consequences of impatience.
