مَنْ نَالَ اسْتَطَالًَ۔
He who gives generously achieves position.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #216)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "مَنْ نَالَ اسْتَطَالًَ۔" which translates to
He who gives generously achieves position.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of generosity and its impact on one's status and position in the eyes of Allah.
To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us analyze the key words. The word (nala) "نَالَ" means to attain or achieve, while (istatala) "استَطَالَ" refers to giving generously or extending oneself in acts of charity. Therefore, this Hadith encourages Muslims to not only give, but to give generously and go beyond what is expected.
The concept of generosity is highly emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 261:
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
This ayah beautifully illustrates the concept of generosity and its abundant rewards. Just as a single seed can yield a bountiful harvest, the act of giving generously multiplies the rewards manifold. It not only benefits the recipient but also elevates the status of the giver in the sight of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 274, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
Those who spend their wealth [in Allah's way] by night and by day, secretly and publicly - they will have their reward with their Lord. And no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.
This verse emphasizes the importance of giving generously in both public and private settings. It highlights that those who give selflessly, without seeking recognition or praise, will be rewarded by Allah. Their acts of generosity will not only bring them closer to Allah but also grant them a sense of security and contentment.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom. His generosity was not limited to material possessions but also extended to sharing his knowledge with others. He would generously impart his wisdom to those who sought guidance, regardless of their social status or background.
The consequence of practicing the teachings of this Hadith is twofold. Firstly, it leads to an elevation in one's spiritual status and position in the sight of Allah. By giving generously, Muslims demonstrate their trust in Allah's provision and their willingness to share His blessings with others. This act of selflessness strengthens their relationship with Allah and earns them His pleasure.
Secondly, generosity has a profound impact on society. When individuals give generously, it creates a culture of compassion, empathy, and support within the community. It fosters a sense of unity and solidarity, where individuals look out for one another and strive to alleviate the hardships of their fellow Muslims. This, in turn, leads to a harmonious society where everyone's needs are met, and no one is left behind.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of generosity and its impact on one's position in the sight of Allah. By giving generously, Muslims not only attain a higher spiritual status but also contribute to the betterment of society. Let us strive to embody the teachings of this Hadith and become individuals who give selflessly, for the sake of pleasing Allah and uplifting our communities. May Allah bless us all with the ability to give generously and achieve a high position in His sight.
