Hadith #6135

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لايُفْسِدُ الدّينَ كَالطَّمَعِ۔" This translates to

Nothing corrupts religion like covetousness.

To understand the essence of this Hadith, let us delve into the important words it contains.

The word (laysa yufsidu) "لايُفْسِدُ" means "nothing corrupts" or "nothing spoils." It signifies the act of causing harm or damage to something pure and pristine. The word (ad-dīn) "الدّينَ" refers to religion, encompassing the entire system of beliefs, practices, and moral values that guide a person's life. Finally, the word (at-tamaʿi) "الطَّمَعِ" translates to "covetousness" or "greed," which refers to an insatiable desire for wealth, power, or possessions.

To shed light on the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the destructive nature of covetousness in several verses. In Surah Al-Imran (3:180), Allah says,

And let not those who [greedily] withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection.

This verse emphasizes that those who hoard wealth and withhold their resources out of greed will face severe consequences on the Day of Judgment. Their actions not only harm themselves but also corrupt the essence of religion. O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.

This verse highlights that covetousness can manifest in various forms, such as indulging in intoxicants, gambling, and engaging in practices that divert one's attention from the remembrance of Allah. These vices not only corrupt an individual's faith but also contribute to the moral decay of society as a whole.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to guard themselves against the destructive influence of covetousness. When we prioritize material possessions and worldly desires over our spiritual well-being, we risk compromising the purity and integrity of our faith.

By succumbing to greed, we become trapped in a never-ending cycle of seeking more, never finding true fulfillment or inner peace.
