لِلْعادَةِ عَلى كُلِّ إنْسان سُلْطانٌ۔
Habit has authority over every human being.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Habit)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لِلْعادَةِ عَلى كُلِّ إنْسان سُلْطانٌ۔
This can be translated as
Habit has authority over every human being.
In this impactful saying , Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the immense power and influence that habits hold over our lives.
To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. (habit) "عادَةِ" refers to a repetitive action or behavior that becomes ingrained in an individual's daily life. It is something that is done regularly and becomes a part of one's routine. (authority) "سُلْطانٌ" signifies the control and dominance that habits exert over a person's actions, thoughts, and character.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that shed light on the significance of habits and their impact on our lives. One such verse is found in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking the eternal abode while not neglecting our responsibilities in this world. It encourages us to develop good habits and avoid corrupt behavior. By doing so, we align ourselves with the teachings of Islam and strive for righteousness.
Another verse that supports the concept of habits is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking Allah's guidance in all aspects of our lives, including our habits. By seeking His help, we can develop firm and righteous habits that will strengthen our faith and lead us towards success in both this world and the Hereafter.
Now, let us reflect on the profound statement of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) that
Habit has authority over every human being.
This statement reminds us that our habits shape our character and ultimately determine our destiny. Our actions, whether good or bad, become ingrained in our nature through repetition and consistency.
For example, if a person consistently engages in acts of kindness and charity, these habits will become a part of their character, leading them to be known as a compassionate and generous individual. On the other hand, if a person consistently engages in acts of dishonesty and deceit, these habits will shape their character, leading them towards corruption and moral decline.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges us to be mindful of the habits we cultivate in our lives. We must strive to develop habits that align with the teachings of Islam and lead us towards righteousness. By consciously choosing to engage in acts of worship, kindness, and self-improvement, we can transform our habits and ultimately transform ourselves.
It is essential to recognize that habits are not formed overnight. They require consistent effort and determination. By starting with small, positive actions and gradually increasing their frequency, we can develop habits that have a positive impact on our lives and the lives of those around us.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the authority and power that habits hold over every human being. It serves as a reminder to be mindful of the habits we cultivate in our lives and to strive for habits that align with the teachings of Islam. By consciously choosing to engage in righteous actions and consistently practicing them, we can transform our habits, strengthen our character, and ultimately seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to develop and maintain habits that lead us towards success in this world and the Hereafter.
