مَنْ أخْلَصَ بَلَغَ الآمالَ۔
One who makes his actions sincere, attains his hopes.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Sincerity And Devotion)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ أخْلَصَ بَلَغَ الآمالَ۔
This can be translated as,
One who makes his actions sincere, attains his hopes.
In this beautiful Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of sincerity in our actions and its direct correlation with achieving our aspirations.
To better understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. The word (akhlasa) "أخْلَصَ" comes from the root word (khalasa) "خَلَصَ", which means to purify or make something pure. In the context of this Hadith, it refers to the act of purifying one's intentions and actions solely for the sake of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It implies sincerity, devotion, and the absence of any ulterior motives.
The word (balagha) "بَلَغَ" means to attain, reach, or achieve. It signifies the realization of one's hopes, desires, or goals. In this Hadith, it represents the fulfillment of our aspirations, both in this world and the Hereafter.
The concept of sincerity in our actions is deeply rooted in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:3),
Is it not to Allah that sincere devotion is due?
This verse emphasizes that true devotion and sincerity should be directed solely towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is through sincere actions that we can attain closeness to Him and achieve our hopes and aspirations.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mumtahina (60:4), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
There has already been for you an excellent pattern in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, 'Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from whatever you worship other than Allah. We have denied you, and there has appeared between us and you animosity and hatred forever until you believe in Allah alone.'
This verse highlights the sincerity of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his companions in their rejection of false idols and their unwavering devotion to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Their sincerity led to the fulfillment of their hopes and the establishment of a righteous legacy.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that sincerity is not only a means to achieve our worldly goals but also a path towards attaining success in the Hereafter. When we perform our acts of worship, such as prayer, fasting, and charity, with pure intentions solely for the sake of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we strengthen our connection with Him and increase our chances of attaining His pleasure.
Sincerity in our actions also has profound consequences in our daily lives. When we approach our relationships, work, and responsibilities with sincerity, we build trust, inspire others, and create a positive impact. Our sincerity becomes a guiding light that illuminates our path towards success and fulfillment.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of constantly purifying our intentions and actions. We should strive to align our aspirations with the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seek His guidance in all that we do. By making our actions sincere, we can attain our hopes and aspirations, both in this world and the Hereafter.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to make our actions sincere and bless us with the attainment of our hopes. Ameen.
