Every obedient one is honoured.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Obedience And Compliance)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "كُلُّ مُطيع مُكَرَّمٌ۔" This can be translated as
Every obedient one is honored.
Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word "muti' " in Arabic refers to someone who is obedient, compliant, and submissive. It signifies a person who willingly follows the commands of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His Messenger (ﷺ). The word "mukarram" means honored, respected, and dignified. It implies that those who are obedient to Allah are bestowed with honor and dignity.
This Hadith resonates with the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of obedience and its correlation with honor and success. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah says, (Quran 4:69)
And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger - those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions.
This verse highlights that those who obey Allah and His Messenger are elevated in status and are granted the company of the righteous, the prophets, the martyrs, and those who affirm the truth. It is a testament to the honor and respect bestowed upon the obedient ones by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 4:59)
O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result.
This verse emphasizes the importance of obedience to Allah and His Messenger, as well as those in authority. It highlights that obedience is not limited to the commands of Allah and His Messenger alone, but also extends to those who hold positions of authority within the Muslim community. By obeying them, Muslims can maintain unity and harmony within their society.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that obedience to Allah is not only a duty but also a means to attain honor and respect. When a person submits to the will of Allah and follows His commands, they are elevated in the sight of Allah and are granted a noble status. This honor is not limited to this world but extends to the Hereafter as well.
The consequences of obedience are profound. It leads to spiritual growth, moral development, and a closer relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Obedience brings about inner peace, contentment, and a sense of purpose in life. It protects us from the pitfalls of sin and guides us towards righteousness.
Moreover, the honor bestowed upon the obedient ones is not limited to personal achievements but extends to their impact on society. When individuals strive to be obedient to Allah, they become a source of inspiration and guidance for others. Their actions and character serve as a beacon of light, attracting others towards the path of righteousness.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, emphasized the importance of obedience throughout his life. He himself was the epitome of obedience to Allah and His Messenger. His unwavering commitment to righteousness and justice earned him the title of
The Gate of Knowledge.
His obedience to Allah and his dedication to the teachings of Islam continue to inspire Muslims across the world.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that obedience to Allah is not only a duty but also a means to attain honor and respect. It reminds us that obedience is not limited to the commands of Allah and His Messenger alone but extends to those in authority within the Muslim community. By obeying Allah and following His guidance, we can attain spiritual growth, moral development, and a closer relationship with our Creator. May Allah grant us the ability to be among the obedient ones and bestow upon us His honor and blessings.
