(Ghurar al-Hikam: Rancor And Perfidy)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الغِشُّ يَكْسِبُ المَسَبَّةَ" which translates to "Perfidy earns vituperation." This concise statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the negative consequences of deceit and treachery. To fully comprehend the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into its key words and explore its implications in light of the Quran.

The word (al-ghish) "الغِشُّ" refers to perfidy, deceit, or treachery. It encompasses any act of dishonesty or betrayal that aims to deceive others for personal gain. The act of perfidy is condemned in Islam, as it goes against the principles of honesty, trustworthiness, and justice that are emphasized throughout the Quran.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against perfidy in several verses of the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:42)

And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].

This verse emphasizes the importance of truthfulness and the prohibition of mixing truth with falsehood. Perfidy involves concealing the truth and presenting falsehood, which is clearly condemned in this verse.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Allah describes the consequences of perfidy, saying, (Quran 2:159)

Indeed, those who conceal what We sent down of clear proofs and guidance after We made it clear for the people in the Scripture - those are cursed by Allah and cursed by those who curse.

This verse highlights the severe consequences of concealing the truth and betraying the trust placed upon individuals to convey the divine message. Those who engage in perfidy are cursed by Allah and by those who curse, indicating the gravity of this offense.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, "Perfidy earns vituperation," serves as a reminder of the negative consequences that await those who engage in deceitful practices. When individuals resort to perfidy, they not only betray the trust of others but also invite condemnation and criticism upon themselves.

The act of perfidy can have far-reaching consequences in various aspects of life. In personal relationships, deceit erodes trust and damages the foundation of any healthy bond. In business dealings, perfidy can lead to financial losses, legal consequences, and a tarnished reputation. In the realm of governance, perfidy undermines justice, fairness, and the well-being of society as a whole.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautiful saying serves as a timeless reminder for Muslims to uphold the values of honesty, integrity, and trustworthiness in all aspects of their lives. It encourages us to reflect on our actions and ensure that we always strive to be truthful and sincere in our dealings with others.

As Muslims, we should take heed of this Hadith and strive to embody the qualities of honesty and trustworthiness that our beloved Prophet Muhammad () and his noble companions exemplified. By doing so, we can build strong and harmonious relationships, contribute to the betterment of society, and earn the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to always choose the path of truth and righteousness, and protect us from the temptations of perfidy. Ameen.
