Hadith #8135

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "نِعْمَ الوَسيلَةُ اَلاِسْتِغْفارُ۔" This can be translated as,

What a good means [of gaining the pleasure of Allah] seeking forgiveness is!

Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran. The key word in this Hadith is (istighfar) "اَلاِسْتِغْفارُ", which means seeking forgiveness from Allah. Istighfar is a powerful act of worship that holds immense significance in Islam. It is a means of purifying the soul, seeking repentance, and attaining the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The importance of seeking forgiveness is emphasized in numerous verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:222),

Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Nisa (4:110), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

This verse assures us that no matter how grave our sins may be, if we sincerely seek forgiveness from Allah, He is Most Forgiving and Merciful.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the greatness of istighfar by stating that it is a good means of gaining the pleasure of Allah. Seeking forgiveness is not only a means of erasing our sins but also a way to draw closer to Allah and attain His pleasure. The consequences of seeking forgiveness are profound. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises in Surah Al-Anfal (8:33),

But Allah would not punish them while you, [O Muhammad], are among them, and Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness.

This verse assures us that seeking forgiveness acts as a shield against punishment and calamities. It is a means of protection and mercy from Allah.

Moreover, seeking forgiveness also leads to self-improvement and personal growth. It allows us to reflect on our actions, rectify our behavior, and strive to become better Muslims. By seeking forgiveness, we acknowledge our mistakes and commit to avoiding them in the future.
