(Ghurar al-Hikam: Deception And The Deceitful)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us against the act of deception, stating that it is a characteristic of the vile and despicable individuals. To understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words and phrases.
The word (khada'ah) "خَدَاعَة" in Arabic refers to deception, trickery, or deceit. It is an act of misleading or manipulating someone by concealing the truth or presenting a false image. The word (khulq) "خُلْقِ" means qualities or attributes, and (al-la'īm) "اللَّئِيمِ" refers to the vile or wicked individuals.
To further comprehend the importance of avoiding deception, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of truthfulness and honesty in various verses. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 9:119)
O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true
This verse highlights the significance of surrounding ourselves with truthful individuals and avoiding deceitful company.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Isra, Allah warns against deception and falsehood, stating, (Quran 17:34)
And do not approach the property of an orphan, except in the way that is best, until he reaches maturity. And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned
This verse emphasizes the importance of fulfilling our commitments and refraining from any form of deception, especially when it comes to matters of financial transactions or dealing with vulnerable individuals.
The consequences of engaging in deception are severe, both in this world and the hereafter. In Surah Al-Nahl, Allah warns, (Quran 16:90-91)
Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded. And fulfill the covenant of Allah when you have taken it, [O believers], and do not break oaths after their confirmation while you have made Allah, over you, a witness. Indeed, Allah knows what you do
These verses highlight the importance of upholding justice and fulfilling our commitments, while also warning against breaking oaths and engaging in deception.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, advises us to be cautious of deception. By doing so, he reminds us of the importance of maintaining integrity and honesty in our actions and interactions. Engaging in deception not only harms others but also tarnishes our own character and reputation. It erodes trust and creates a toxic environment where deceit becomes the norm.
Furthermore, deception can have far-reaching consequences beyond immediate personal gain. It can lead to the breakdown of relationships, the loss of trust, and the deterioration of society as a whole. By avoiding deception, we contribute to the establishment of a just and harmonious society, where truth and honesty prevail.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to abstain from engaging in deception. This act is condemned as it goes against the teachings of Islam, which emphasize truthfulness, honesty, and integrity. By adhering to these principles, we not only uphold our own moral character but also contribute to the betterment of society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to always speak the truth and protect us from the snares of deception.
