(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Ignorant And The Foolish)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
رُبَّ جاهِل نَجاتُهُ جَهْلُهُ۔
This can be translated as,
Many an ignorant person is saved by his ignorance.
Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (jahil) "جاهِل" in this Hadith refers to an ignorant person, someone who lacks knowledge or understanding. Ignorance can manifest in various aspects of life, including religious matters, worldly affairs, and interpersonal relationships. It is important to note that the term "ignorant" in this context does not imply a derogatory connotation, but rather refers to a lack of knowledge or understanding.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6),
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and verifying information before passing judgment or taking action. It warns against acting out of ignorance, as it can lead to harm and regret.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:43), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, you recognize in the faces of those who disbelieve disapproval. They are almost on the verge of assaulting those who recite to them Our verses. Say, 'Then shall I inform you of [what is] worse than that? [It is] the Fire which Allah has promised those who disbelieve, and wretched is the destination.'
This verse highlights the danger of ignorance, particularly in matters of faith. The disbelievers mentioned in the verse rejected the clear signs of Allah, and their ignorance led them to oppose and even harm those who conveyed the message. This serves as a reminder to Muslims to seek knowledge and understanding of their faith, so as not to fall into the trap of ignorance that can lead to disbelief and destructive actions.
Now, coming back to the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),
Many an ignorant person is saved by his ignorance.
This statement holds profound wisdom. It implies that sometimes, due to their lack of knowledge or understanding, an ignorant person may be spared from the consequences of their actions. For example, if someone unknowingly commits a sin, their ignorance may serve as a shield against accountability until they gain knowledge and rectify their behavior.
However, it is crucial to note that this Hadith does not encourage or justify remaining in a state of ignorance. Islam places great emphasis on seeking knowledge and understanding. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11),
O you who have believed, when you are told, 'Make room in assemblies,' then make room; Allah will make space for you. And when you are told, 'Arise,' then arise; Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse highlights the importance of knowledge and the elevated status of those who possess it. Therefore, while this Hadith acknowledges the potential temporary reprieve that ignorance may provide, it ultimately encourages Muslims to strive for knowledge and understanding in order to navigate life's challenges and fulfill their responsibilities as believers.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),
Many an ignorant person is saved by his ignorance,
reminds us of the significance of seeking knowledge and understanding. While ignorance may sometimes offer temporary protection from the consequences of our actions, it is not a state to be desired or perpetuated. Muslims are encouraged to acquire knowledge, both religious and worldly, in order to lead a fulfilling and righteous life. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to seek knowledge and apply it in our lives.
