(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Muslims)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

إنَّ المُسْلِمينَ (المُؤمِنين) مُسْتَكينُونَ

which can be translated as,

Verily the Muslims (or the believers) are humble.

Let us delve into the meaning of the important words in this Hadith. The word "Muslimin" refers to those who have submitted themselves to the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and have embraced Islam. The word "Mu'minin" refers to the believers who have faith in Allah and His Messenger () and strive to follow the teachings of Islam. The word "mustakinoon" comes from the root word "sakana", which means to be calm, tranquil, and at peace.

To understand the wise message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes the importance of unity and brotherhood among Muslims, regardless of their backgrounds or ethnicities. It teaches us that true nobility lies in righteousness and piety. Therefore, the humility mentioned in the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is not just a physical act of being humble, but it encompasses a deeper sense of humility in character, behavior, and interactions with others.

Another verse that supports the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:1-2), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Certainly will the believers have succeeded: They who are during their prayer humbly submissive.

This verse highlights the importance of humility in prayer, which is a fundamental aspect of a Muslim's life. It reminds us that true success lies in being humble and submissive before Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) during our acts of worship. This humility in prayer should also extend to our interactions with others, as we strive to embody the teachings of Islam in our daily lives.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to cultivate a sense of humility in all aspects of their lives. This humility should be reflected in our relationships with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) through sincere worship and submission to His will. It should also manifest in our interactions with fellow human beings, treating them with kindness, respect, and empathy.

When Muslims embrace humility, it leads to a harmonious society where individuals are not consumed by arrogance or self-centeredness. Instead, they prioritize the well-being of others, seek to uplift those in need, and work towards the betterment of society as a whole. This humility also fosters unity among Muslims, as they recognize their shared humanity and the importance of standing together in the face of challenges.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the significance of humility in the lives of Muslims. It calls upon us to embody this quality in our character, actions, and interactions with others. By doing so, we can strive towards becoming true believers who are humble before Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and who contribute positively to the well-being of society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate humility in our lives and bless us with His mercy and guidance.
