Conceit is the cornerstone of ignorance.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Conceit)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Conceit is the cornerstone of ignorance.

Let us delve into the connotation of this statement in light of the Quran.

The word (ujb) "عُجْبُ" in this Hadith refers to conceit or arrogance. It is a state of being excessively proud of oneself, considering oneself superior to others, and looking down upon them. This arrogance blinds a person to their own shortcomings and prevents them from seeking knowledge and understanding.

The word (ras) "رَأْسُ" means the cornerstone or foundation. It signifies the fundamental basis upon which something is built. In this context, it refers to the fact that conceit is the root cause of ignorance. When a person is filled with arrogance, they become closed-minded and unwilling to learn from others. This hinders their intellectual growth and prevents them from acquiring knowledge and wisdom.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of humility and warn against the dangers of arrogance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse highlights the importance of not looking down upon others and not ridiculing or insulting them. It reminds us that we should not judge others based on our own limited understanding, as they may possess qualities and virtues that we are unaware of. Arrogance blinds us to the potential for growth and learning that lies within every individual.

Another verse that sheds light on the consequences of arrogance is found in Surah Al-Qasas (28:83), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

That home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth or corruption. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous.

This verse reminds us that those who are humble and do not seek to elevate themselves above others will be rewarded in the Hereafter. On the other hand, those who are filled with arrogance and seek to dominate and oppress others will face the consequences of their actions.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, warns us about the dangers of conceit. When a person is consumed by arrogance, they become closed off to new ideas, unable to recognize their own flaws, and unwilling to seek guidance from others. This leads to a stagnation of intellectual growth and a perpetuation of ignorance.

Conversely, humility opens the doors to knowledge and understanding. It allows us to recognize our own limitations and seek guidance from those who possess greater knowledge and wisdom. It enables us to approach learning with an open mind and a willingness to accept new ideas and perspectives.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that conceit is the cornerstone of ignorance. Arrogance blinds us to our own shortcomings and prevents us from seeking knowledge and understanding. The Quran emphasizes the importance of humility and warns against the dangers of arrogance. May we strive to cultivate humility in our hearts and minds, and may Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us on the path of knowledge and wisdom.
