نِعْمَ قَرينُ السَّخاءِ الْحَياءُ۔
The best partner of generosity is modesty.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Modesty And Shame)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The best partner of generosity is modesty.
Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith and explore its profound implications in light of the Quran.
The word (qarinu) "قَرِينُ" in Arabic refers to a partner or companion. In this context, it signifies the quality or characteristic that accompanies generosity. (sakhā') "السَّخَاءِ" means generosity, the act of giving and being charitable. And (hayā') "الْحَيَاءُ" translates to modesty or shyness.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:177),
Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves.
This verse emphasizes the importance of giving generously to those in need. However, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) adds another dimension to this act of generosity by highlighting the role of modesty as its best partner. Modesty acts as a safeguard against arrogance and ostentation, ensuring that our acts of generosity are sincere and free from any desire for recognition or worldly gain.
In Surah Al-Hajj (22:36), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And the camels and cattle We have appointed for you as among the symbols of Allah; for you therein is good. So mention the name of Allah upon them when lined up [for sacrifice]; and when they are [lifeless] on their sides, then eat from them and feed the needy and the beggar. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may be grateful.
This verse highlights the importance of sharing our blessings with those in need. However, when we do so, it is crucial to do it with modesty and humility, without seeking attention or praise. The act of giving should be solely for the sake of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), seeking His pleasure and not the admiration of others.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement reminds us that true generosity is not just about giving material possessions but also encompasses the attitude and intention behind our actions. Modesty acts as a companion to generosity, ensuring that our acts of giving are sincere, selfless, and free from any trace of arrogance or pride.
When we combine generosity with modesty, our actions become a means of purifying our souls and strengthening our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It allows us to develop a sense of empathy and compassion towards others, recognizing that the blessings we have are a trust from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and should be used to benefit those in need.
Moreover, the combination of generosity and modesty fosters a sense of unity and solidarity within the Muslim community. It encourages us to support one another, uplift the downtrodden, and alleviate the suffering of those less fortunate. By embodying these qualities, we contribute to the establishment of a just and compassionate society, as envisioned by Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true generosity is accompanied by modesty. It reminds us to give with sincerity, humility, and a pure intention, seeking only the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By embodying these qualities, we not only fulfill our duty towards those in need but also purify our souls and strengthen our relationship with our Creator. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be generous and modest in all aspects of our lives.
