(Ghurar al-Hikam: Deliberateness And Acting Unhurriedly)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "بِالتَّأنّي تَسْهُلُ المَطالِبُ۔" which translates to,

Through deliberateness, matters become easy.

This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of taking one's time and approaching matters with careful consideration and thoughtfulness.

The word (ta'anni) "تَأَنِّي" in this Hadith refers to deliberateness or carefulness. It implies a sense of patience, thoughtfulness, and mindfulness in one's actions and decision-making process. It encourages individuals to avoid hastiness and impulsive behavior, and instead, to approach matters with a calm and composed mindset.

This teaching of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) finds support in the Quranic verses that emphasize the virtues of patience, wisdom, and reflection. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 153:

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse reminds Muslims of the importance of patience and seeking Allah's assistance through prayer in times of difficulty. It encourages them to adopt a deliberate and patient approach in facing challenges.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf, verse 205, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech - in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless.

This verse emphasizes the importance of introspection, reflection, and mindfulness in one's relationship with Allah. It encourages Muslims to be deliberate and conscious of their actions, thoughts, and intentions.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that by approaching matters with deliberateness, they can achieve ease and success. When one takes the time to carefully analyze a situation, consider the consequences of their actions, and seek guidance from Allah through prayer and reflection, they are more likely to make wise decisions and find ease in their endeavors.

Deliberateness allows individuals to avoid impulsive and hasty actions that may lead to negative outcomes. It enables them to weigh the pros and cons, consider different perspectives, and make informed choices. By doing so, they can avoid unnecessary hardships and complications that may arise from rash decisions.

For example, in personal relationships, taking a deliberate approach means carefully considering the feelings and needs of others before responding or making decisions. This can prevent misunderstandings, conflicts, and hurt feelings. Similarly, in matters of faith, taking the time to study and reflect on the teachings of Islam before forming opinions or taking actions ensures that one's beliefs and actions are in line with the guidance of Allah and His Messenger ().

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of deliberateness in our actions and decision-making process. By approaching matters with patience, thoughtfulness, and mindfulness, we can achieve ease and success in our endeavors. This teaching is supported by Quranic verses that emphasize the virtues of patience, wisdom, and reflection. As Muslims, we should strive to embody these qualities in our daily lives, seeking Allah's guidance and making deliberate choices that align with His teachings. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be deliberate and mindful in all aspects of our lives.
