التَّدْبيرُ قَبْلَ العَمَلِ يُؤْمِنُ النَّدَمَ۔
Planning before action saves one from regret.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Planning)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
التَّدْبيرُ قَبْلَ العَمَلِ يُؤْمِنُ النَّدَمَ۔
This can be translated as,
Planning before action saves one from regret.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this amazing Hadith in light of the Quranic teachings.
The word (tadbir) "التَّدْبيرُ" refers to planning, strategizing, and carefully considering the course of action before undertaking it. It implies the act of thinking ahead, weighing the pros and cons, and making informed decisions. This word emphasizes the importance of foresight and wisdom in our actions.
The word (amal) "العَمَلِ" means action or deed. It encompasses all our physical and spiritual endeavors, whether they are related to our personal lives, our relationships, or our worship. It signifies the actual implementation of our plans and intentions.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us that by engaging in thoughtful planning before taking action, we can save ourselves from regret. This means that when we carefully consider the consequences and potential outcomes of our actions, we are more likely to make wise choices that align with our values and goals. By doing so, we can avoid the remorse and guilt that often accompany hasty or ill-considered decisions.
The Quranic teachings support the importance of planning and deliberation before taking action. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:159)
And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].
This verse highlights the significance of seeking Allah's guidance and relying on Him after careful planning. It reminds us that while we should make efforts and plan, we must also place our trust in Allah and seek His support in all our endeavors.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 17:80)
And say: 'My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.'
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking Allah's assistance in our planning and decision-making processes. It reminds us to ask for His guidance and support in order to make sound choices that will lead us to success and fulfillment.
When we reflect on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can see the profound wisdom behind his words. By engaging in thoughtful planning before taking action, we can avoid the remorse and regret that often follow impulsive or ill-considered decisions. This principle applies to all aspects of our lives, whether it is making important life choices, managing our time effectively, or even performing our religious obligations.
For example, when it comes to making career choices, careful planning and consideration of our skills, interests, and future prospects can help us make informed decisions that align with our passions and aspirations. Similarly, in our relationships, taking the time to understand and communicate with others before making important decisions can prevent misunderstandings and regrets.
In terms of worship, planning our prayers, fasting, and acts of charity can help us establish a consistent and meaningful connection with Allah. By organizing our time and setting realistic goals, we can ensure that we fulfill our religious obligations and engage in acts of worship that are sincere and impactful.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of planning before taking action. By carefully considering the consequences and potential outcomes of our decisions, we can make wise choices that align with our values and goals. This principle is supported by the Quranic teachings, which emphasize seeking Allah's guidance and relying on Him in our planning and decision-making processes. May Allah grant us the wisdom and foresight to plan our actions thoughtfully and save us from regret.
