(Ghurar al-Hikam: Moderation)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "اَلاِقْتِصادُ يُنْمِى القَليلَ۔" This is translated as,

Moderation makes [that which is] little grow [and increase].

Let us delve into the profound wisdom and guidance contained within this Hadith, and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (al-iqtisad) "اَلاِقْتِصادُ" in this Hadith refers to the concept of moderation or balance. It encompasses the idea of avoiding extremes and finding a middle path in all aspects of life. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of moderation, as it leads to growth and increase.

This concept of moderation is beautifully reflected in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 143:

And thus We have made you a just community that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you.

This verse highlights the importance of balance and justice in the Muslim community. By adhering to moderation, Muslims become witnesses to the truth and serve as a source of guidance for others.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hadid, verse 25, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

We sent Our messengers with clear signs and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice.

Here, the Quran emphasizes the importance of balance and moderation in maintaining justice. It is through moderation that individuals can uphold justice in their personal and societal affairs.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith teaches us that moderation has the power to make even the little things grow and increase. This principle can be applied in various aspects of our lives. For instance, in matters of wealth and finances, practicing moderation allows us to manage our resources wisely. By avoiding extravagance and excessive spending, we can make our wealth grow and increase over time.

Similarly, in matters of knowledge, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to seek knowledge in a balanced and measured manner. By adopting a moderate approach to learning, we can gradually acquire knowledge and wisdom, allowing it to grow and enrich our lives.

Moreover, moderation is essential in our relationships and interactions with others. By practicing moderation in our speech, actions, and emotions, we can maintain harmony and balance in our interactions. This approach fosters healthy relationships and allows them to flourish and grow.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to embrace moderation in all aspects of life. By avoiding extremes and finding a balanced approach, we can experience growth, increase, and prosperity. This principle aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the importance of balance, justice, and moderation.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the profound wisdom of moderation. By practicing moderation, we can make even the little things grow and increase. This principle is in line with the Quranic teachings of balance, justice, and maintaining a middle path. As Muslims, let us strive to embody this principle in our lives and witness the blessings that come with moderation. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to the path of moderation and grant us success in this life and the Hereafter.
