ما مِنْ شَيْء يَحصُلُ بِهِ الأمانُ أبْلَغَ مِنْ ايمان وإحسان۔
Nothing brings greater security than [having] faith and [performing] good deeds.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Security)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
ما مِنْ شَيْء يَحصُلُ بِهِ الأمانُ أبْلَغَ مِنْ ايمان وإحسان۔
This beautiful saying emphasizes the importance of faith and good deeds in attaining true security and tranquility in our lives.
Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (aman) "أمان" refers to security, safety, and peace. It signifies a state of being free from harm, fear, and distress. (iman) "إيمان" means faith or belief in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His Messenger (ﷺ). It encompasses the acceptance of the articles of faith and the submission to Allah's commandments. (ihsan) "إحسان" refers to excellence in actions, going beyond the mere fulfillment of obligations, and striving for perfection in worship and conduct.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that highlight the significance of faith and good deeds in attaining security and tranquility. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Yunus (10:62-63),
No doubt! Verily, the Awliya' of Allah [i.e., those who believe in the Oneness of Allah and fear Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden), and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)], no fear shall come upon them nor shall they grieve. Those who believed and used to fear Allah much (by abstaining from evil deeds and sins and by doing righteous deeds).
This verse emphasizes that those who have faith and perform good deeds will be under the protection and care of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). They will be free from fear and grief, as their trust in Allah and their righteous actions bring them true security. Similarly, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute (with one another) lest you lose courage and your strength depart, and be patient. Surely, Allah is with those who are As-Sabirin (the patient ones).
This verse reminds us that obedience to Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) is a means of attaining strength and security. When Muslims unite in faith and good deeds, they are granted the support and assistance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), which brings them true peace and tranquility.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we understand that faith and good deeds are inseparable. Faith is the foundation upon which good deeds are built, and good deeds are the manifestation of true faith. They go hand in hand, and both are essential for attaining security and tranquility in our lives.
When we have faith in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His Messenger (ﷺ), we are guided by the divine teachings and principles. This faith motivates us to perform good deeds, such as acts of worship, kindness, charity, and justice. These good deeds not only benefit others but also purify our souls and bring us closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The consequences of having faith and performing good deeds are profound. They bring us inner peace, contentment, and a sense of purpose. They strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and enable us to navigate through the challenges of life with resilience and trust in His plan. Moreover, our faith and good deeds serve as a source of inspiration and guidance for others, spreading goodness and righteousness in society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that true security and tranquility can only be attained through faith and good deeds. These two pillars of Islam are interconnected and complement each other. By nurturing our faith and striving for excellence in our actions, we can experience the peace and serenity that comes from being close to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to strengthen our faith and perform righteous deeds, and may He bless us with true security and tranquility in this world and the hereafter.
